Is anyone still on here who can advise about 15/16 yo 'fashion'? I need to buy DS1 shoes to go with 'smart casual ' dress code. (He needs new shoes anyway). I think smart casual means smart jeans and polo shirts etc is OK so am guessing trainers of some kind might be OK. Anyway, it's all a bit of a minefield these days and I draw the line at shoes costing £60 +! (unless he requests for his birthday which is unlikely). he is currently happily ramming his feet into Nike skater shoes which are two sizes too small so he feels no sense of urgency but they aren't smart enough either I think. He may not even go to this school in the end so they need to go with anything ... Is it just me that thinks smart casual is the worst of all worlds?? Smart I could do (a bit resentfully) and casual is easy peasy (although I still wouldn't know what would be the fashion faux pas!) smart causal : what even is that!!???

Any help gratefully received!

She looks beautiful lania hope she had a great time.

No prom at dd's school Sad Apparently the girls had to organise it themselves. There was a bit of talk about it a few months ago but what with exams and general teenage flakiness it didn't happen. Is it usual for the students to organise prom rather than school?

Thanks Tiggy : I thought about getting black ones but then worried he wouldn't be able to wear them with shorts etc...I think it's stressing me out rather more than him!

Piggywaspushed · 24/06/2017 13:00

And our Brantano shut down otherwise I'd force encourage him to learn how to get a bus/ look after himself / shop and go out during study leave and find some himself.

AtiaoftheJulii · 24/06/2017 13:46

At all three of my kids' schools it's the kids doing the organising - it doesn't usually happen at the school and the school have no part in it.

I think our school refuses to have anything to do with it! Don't want the responsibility of 150 emotional, hormonal, drunk teenagers, and I can't say that I blame them.

Piggywaspushed · 24/06/2017 15:46

I used to organise the prom as HOY. I am no longer a HOY and don't really miss it as it was so all consuming (and fairly thankless at least as far as staff thanks went!). We had it on site and had 450 students!!

That's a lot of trips to Costco...

Piggywaspushed · 24/06/2017 15:47

I don't even know id there is one at my DS's school. I think they have a summer ball or some such but he has shown no interest.

It's a huge thing at my own school : everyone goes.

Giddyaunt18 · 24/06/2017 16:41

My DD's school organised it. No alcohol though poison !!!

pointythings · 24/06/2017 16:57

It's a joint thing at DD's school - there's a prom committee (which includes all the prefects, it's a mandatory part of their duties) and they collaborate with the school.

settledandsmug · 24/06/2017 17:41

DS has last exam Monday, leavers day Tuesday, then Prom hosted by very nice local hotel (no alcohol permitted) on Wednesday followed by sixth form induction Friday. Then his summer holidays start!

ifonly4 · 24/06/2017 20:39

settled, your DS will be one of the last ones taking exams. Hope it goes ok for him.

Luckily DD's school organises prom for them. It's a big school with over 225 in each year but they do it. It a shame there are some schools that don't even do anything in even their school hall. DD's school you have to have over 96% attendance, no recent detentions and no chance of a drink on the night.

Laniakea · 24/06/2017 21:54

Yeah it is organised by the kids at dd's too (she was in prom commitee & it's a big deal - they do the year books too though that has to be approved by the HOY to avoid anything inappropriate!).

It was at a local hotel - no alcohol - dd's friend's dad organised a mini bus to take a bunch if them down but about half the year arrived by tractor - they are rural Grin All their form teachers, HOY & headmaster were there. Lots of funny photos.

By all accounts it was a good night & dd managed not to get too horrendously drunk (or vomit) at the after party so full marks from me!

She's been asleep since 7pm :) ... induction on Monday & Tuesday

minesawine · 25/06/2017 10:16

My DS had his prom on Friday. Pre prom party for 12 DC's at my house with a few sneaky alchopops and cider consumed. They all looked lovely and it was so nice seeing my DS hang out with his mates, having fun and just being a fantastic host. I was very proud of him. The ugly stretch limo arrived to great cheers. I hate them, expensive and tacky BUT the kids all loved it and that's what its all about. I had a little tear in my eye as it drove off. Very proud mummy

Laniakea · 25/06/2017 11:45

that sounds lovely mines it is surprisingly emotional

AtiaoftheJulii · 27/06/2017 06:46

Hope all those who finished yesterday are feeling suitably relaxed Grin

ST went shopping with a friend yesterday and is planning to sleep and sleep.some more this week.

DD2 has finished her and of year exams with maths a lot better than expected so peace reigns chez pointy.

Madhairday · 27/06/2017 14:23

Has everyone finished now?

Just went shopping for DDS prom dress. We found a stunning one, she's so happy. Last in her size and colour too :)

Giddyaunt18 · 27/06/2017 16:49

DD had her 6th form induction day today and loved it. She did come home with a big reading list though so that will keep her busy! That's it now, she is officially finished until 24th August. Have a good summer!

errorofjudgement · 02/07/2017 22:17

Sixth form induction here tomorrow, and a thread bump so we don't lose this in August!

BertrandRussell · 03/07/2017 07:42

Ds had a 3 day 6th form induction last week-he came back so excited. He auditioned for a play and the orchestra and just loved it.

It's going to be awful if he doesn't get the grades............

errorofjudgement · 03/07/2017 17:14

That sounds excellent. DDs was gif a half day, and a log of people were missing because it clashes with NCS

AtiaoftheJulii · 03/07/2017 17:26

Three days, wow. Ds had a day at college on Friday, really enjoyed it, and is mostly looking forward to calling the teachers by their first names Grin
