Midyis test?

Can any secondary school teachers shed any light on the midyis test. Went to parents evening last night. Lots of figures thrown at me. One that stuck out was what i think was the midyis score but it doesn't make sense when I look online. She is very able in most areas. Te performing arts teacher referred me to a scoreon a piece of paper and mentioned the midyis test and the figure was 91.7. She was on track for level 8 at gcse. This doesnt match though doesit? I noticed some of the other scores were up to 99% but lower numbers for gcse? (Other children, same subject) can't quite get my head around it?

95% of pupils score between 70 and 130. Over 130 (only 2.5% of pupils) are gifted and talented. Below 85 may suggest SEN. The Mean score will be at 100.

That's what i mean. She's very able so the 91.7 figure mustn't have been her midyis score as the teacher suggested. It was alongside a predicted 8 for pa. She's predicted all 8s and 9s.

Maybe they meant she was performing on the 91.7 centile ie. only 8% of the people tested scored higher than her.

I'm interested in this midyis thread. Would I be correct in saying that you can't over perform but you can under perform? I have 2 DD's with a 2 year age difference. One has scored considerably better than the other but at school they track along a similar path. One of the scores can't be right.

Weary that is what we were told in the covering letter from school. They sent out the scores to parents with examples to illustrate different permutations. We were also told Midyis scores in yr7 should be taken with a pinch of salt as some children come into their own later.

Well that's interesting because I don't think there is any widely accepted definition. Two percent does get thrown around sometimes, but it varies. Choosing any standardised score above the +2 standard deviations line is a mathematical convenience. Was it a tradition? If so when and where?

Not got the answer because I'm not sure I have a clear understanding of what I've Googled but it looks like it all started in the USA with the study run by Lewis Terman.

It's from Durham University and I started using it in the days before it was computerised. Things may have changed now, but it always used to give four scores for different aspects like numeracy non verbal etc and then an overall score.

It was useful for schools to look at the ability profile of a cohort because it would define how many pupils were A band, B,C,D bands. You could see the spread across the group and plan accordingly. It was also useful to look at individual profiles and see the strengths and weaknesses. Again, there were A,B,C,D bands, although this may have changed. 100 is usually used as an 'average' and above that is more able and below, less able. 90-110 would be regarded as being within the average range though. If you had s child with a score of 130 in one aspect and 85 in another, for example, you would have good information about their strengths and deficits, rather than an overall score that would not give you so much.

Midyis stands for Middle Years Information Systems.

I do use them and refer to them but would not take them as "gospel" in terms of predictions.
A very hard working pupil with a low band and score can easily get better results than a lazy band A pupil.
Pupils can easily under perform on the day as well. However, they are used in terms of teachers being accountable re: value added results etc.

Its is probably her percentile score not MIDYIS. They are a guide only. I've had a pupil on 84 get a C, and one on 127 get a C too. Work ethic makes a big difference.
