What are the options for kids who don't make the grade please?

Mine has a couple of years to go yet but has dropped significantly in key areas. Obviously we are addressing this but say this continued and she didn't get the grades what happens?

I have been looking at the courses in areas she wants to do and none of them take anyone with anything less than a C.

Can you redo GCSEs at college? Can you mix redos with a course?

Help!

Yes. And sort of.

You can spend a year at college doing level 2 courses (including Maths and/or English GCSE) before starting level 3 courses (such as a level 3 BTEC).

Options after GCSEs are broadly

  • A Levels (academic, level 3 courses)
  • BTEC (vocational level 3 or level 2)
  • Foundation(?) (lower than level 2, eg functional skills)
  • Apprenticeships (leading to level 2 or level 3 qualifications)

You can retake (in fact 'have to') English and Maths at college if you don't get high enough first time around. You can't generally retake anything else. But you can progress to a Level3 BTEC by taking the Level2 BTEC first.

Apprenticeships are training on the job, sometimes with day release to college, but lead to a formal qualification (and still always?? require written work?). They are paid the apprenticeship wage which is lower than NMW.

(approximately, DD is doing a Level3 BTEC and looking to do an apprenticeship afterwards)
