Homework when off sick

DS is in year 7. He's had a nasty virus this week, and has missed 2 days of school. He's aware that homework has been set, but getting details of it from other kids is difficult, as they're all a bit ditzy I think!

He won't see the relevant teachers again before the end of term.

I've emailed the teachers to ask what the homework is, but they haven't replied, and presumably after tomorrow they won't be checking their work emails again.

So my question is, what's the deal with homework set while you're off sick? Is it the child's responsibility to find out the details and do the homework accordingly? Or are kids exempt from homework if they were off when it was set?

DS is very anxious to avoid getting into any trouble.

In my school you aren't expected to do homework if you were of when it was set. It does, however, impress teachers if you go and speak to them when you are better and ask for homework you missed so you can catch up.

I think it depends on what year you are in. I don't think it matters in year 7, but it does higher up the school, especially in the GCSE and A level years.

At ds's school you are not expected to do homework set whilst off sick. In most cases if you've missed the lesson the homework won't make sense anyway.

My kids always email the teachers about missing work and homework when they're off sick, with variable responses. If he's not to see them before the end of term, I would doubt they'd be bothered in January!

I teach English. For any absence of less than a week I expect pupils to catch up any chapters of any books we've read (if we're on a reading unit). I don't expect them to catch up anything else.
