My son plays double bass - he chose this instrument as he liked the size and the deep sound. I now considering future independent schools - woudl they consider this instrument for scholarship?

Yes - they may even favour it over a more common instrument, but most schools require a second instrument for a music award. In some cases, the voice will be sufficient if he sings well.

My DD is sitting scholarship exams and performances in the next couple of weeks. She does not need a second instrument. We ruled out one school for her, but the other two are obviously looking for ability and passion. One school in particular is looking for pupils who want to form music groups themselves, ie chamber group, folk group etc and put together concerts themselves
