NynaevesSister · 27/09/2016 18:43

loveyouradvice do you have a child there? My son just started this year.

I am not the OP but I have a couple of questions to start the ball rolling:
How have your DSs found going to an all-boys school?
I know its a specialist in performing arts but what if your child is not the performing arts type, are there other opportunities?

I have a DS at Forest Hill. I'm not a huge advocate of single sex education, but I think it has some advantages, with less gender stereotyping and less obsession with the opposite sex in school.

My DS is completely not the performing arts type, he hates it. It amounts to one dance and one drama lesson a week for those who are not talented in this area. Thankfully the school is reasonably academically inclined, with a particular strength in maths, which is far more his thing.

My son isn't into dance or drama either but it is one of the reasons we picked the school as its Music program and facilities were impressive. Also loved it's art and design. So far art seems to be son's favourite.

The school is very strong in maths, science and computer science.

It wasn't easy for us choosing a single sex school either but I was impressed with how nurturing it seemed and so far our experience of its pastoral care has been great. I've felt very welcomed and included by the school too.

We are making sure he goes to at least two mixed gender clubs outside of school. At the moment in Year 7 it isn't an issue.

Thank you for your lovely comments.
It seems you're quite happy with the school. We are going on a open day next week and will see how it goes. We don't really have big choices where we live so really the dilemma will be between Forest Hill and KingsdaleHmm

I spent ages looking at all the schools around us! I really couldn't decide between Kingsdale and Forest Hill. Son absolutely loved Forest Hill and wasn't so keen on Kingsdale. In my research I felt the pastoral care at both schools was the best of all the schools we looked at. In the end we put Kingsdale down first simply because we live in walking distance while Forest Hill was a bus ride. However was relieved to get Forest Hill when I found out this year's intake at year 7 was bumped up to 390! I think that's just too big and also all the building work. That's not a problem but son just went through years of that at primary!
