DD has predicted GCSE grades of 8 and 9. What should she be aiming for at the end of year 8 to be on track?

Our school will still use the same gradings as the gcse so will show 8 and 9 if they are at the level that will give an 8 or 9 at the end of year 11.

How many schools are predicting 9s to future cohorts, when the first cohort to be awarded them have yet to be examined?

No one knows what a level 8 or 9 looks like as no exams with this grading have taken place. Therefore it is absolutely impossible for MN to say what grades she should be at in year 8!

Fuck knows. I don't even know what my Y11s are going to get. And each school will be doing something different since they scrapped levels.

It's when you read shite like this then I feel even more justified in paying for sons' education!

Why SAHD? Do they do different exams at private schools?

Schools won't be randomly predicting Y8 kids grade 9s, they're computer generated FFT targets. Our Y8s have certainly had their GCSe targets since last year, with a bunch of level 9s, even though the consultation to decide how many level 9s to award hadn't even closed! Now they've reduced the number of 9s in maths by 3000, I wonder if the targets will be amended.

We don't give them to the parents though, there's no point as they'll change so much over the coming years. Schools never used to give GCSE grades in Y7 because it was obviously stupid, but now they've scrapped levels loads of schools are doing it because they've got nothing else to give.

Titchy - they just grade them as inline with expected performance or above or below expectations. Plus effort grades. Only need to do anything if they're below executed level in any subject.

SAHDthatsall, my son's state school does the same as your private and some private schools definitely do the grade prediction thing too. My niece is under incredible stress at her private school, as they give them new grade targets every half term. Purely anecdotal, but honestly you can't generalise - seems to me there's incredible pressure on the kids in both sectors.

SAHD - unless you are being ironic, saying you feel even more justified for paying for your son's education when you read this "shite" is ridiculous. The only difference is that you are paying to be told the school has no idea what the grades will look like, because nobody knows, while others are hearing it for free.

They're using the same grading method they have for years. No need to make predications, no point.

Well predictions are useful for students because they need to know what sixth form courses are open to them with particular grades. And for universities to be able to make offers. There is a point, and your school will be making predictions definitely, because that's how they base their interventions. They may not share them with pupils and parents I suppose.
