Teachers: if unpleasant videos posted online by students were brought to your notice, would you feel the need to take action? If so, what?

Mostly just oikish behaviour, some of it taking place on the school premises & whilst in uniform - school clearly identified in captions/tags.

Head teacher has been made aware (by a senior colleague) - isn't rushing to do anything about it.

However, one clip shows students I know chanting some fairly ugly racist stuff. It's out of school so arguably absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with me - but I know these young men (& some of their parents) & am sickened.

Any suggestions?

I'm not a teacher so I don't know the system. Can you talk it through with whichever Union you are in?

I believe because it is out of school then there is nothing you can do. I would be tempted to speak to the police tbh as it is racist. I am also a teacher btw.

Yes, I would report it to the school seniour management, and would want it taken down asap.

If you don't get anywhere I would contact your union rep. This sort of thing always tends to spiral. Nip it in the bud

I would also avoid watching the videos yourself.

Astudent once showed the students a horrid clip of someon being shot, no dount fake but still unpleasant and he was excluded for it.

We excluded someone for downloading the vid of Ken Bigley being beheaded, but that was a dowenload on school time/ property

DS2's school has just sent out a letter to parents about similar problems - which would surely include the racist chanting you describe. The school asked to be informed of cyber bullying etc and suggested that parents should also be vigilant as to what is on their children's web pages/phonecameras.

If the head isn't doing anything, make sure the Governors are aware too.

If some of this behaviour has taken place on school premises and/or in uniform, then surely it's within the school's remit to deal with it.

They're representing the school, after all. (Old fashioned idea, I know, but one I like to cling to).

Tell head who ought to do something particularly due to a. being in uniform and b. racist content
Schools are legally obliged to report any racist behaviour to the police.....

The ones in uniform & on school grounds aren't racist (kids hitting each other & Jackass type nonsense - as a parent I'd not be at ALL impressed, but probably what you expect of half a dozen teenage lads & a camera phone). The racist stuff is the same kids, pissed, out of school - same youtube account & same star cast so, clearly identifiable links.

Anyway, it's with the Head. I'm not even sure what, if any, response is appropriate from school. I just find it all rather offensive.
