No more bells! Does your school do this?

Our secondary school have decided they will not be using the school bell anymore to signal the beginning or start of classes.
Has anyone got any experience of how this works in their children's school?

Our school has beeps rather than bells. They signify end of period, start of form etc

I wonder why they are stopping the bells? Teachers and students would surely be clock watching more so they are not late for the next class.

We changed last year. Much calmer around school site. Means pupils remain engaged until the teacher finishes the lesson rather than being halfway out the door whilst teacher is finishing up. No need to clock watch - you can hear when one of the nearby classes is leaving.

That's interesting Fortress. One of mine has ASD so she's anxious about not knowing when classes finish and to get to the next class in time, but tbh I think it will suit her if things are calmer.

I suspect it depends on how long your lessons are. Don't think it would work for 35 or 40 minute lessons, but ours are an hour, so I think there are only 2 points in the day when you leave one lesson to go to another lesson (rather than break/lunch/assembly).

DS's school has no bells (and hasn't ever as far as I know). The children are expected to wear watches (though I think most of them go by the time on their phones!). The whole school is still moving en masse, so I think it is pretty obvious when the next lesson time is.

We turn the bells on and off depending on events going on.
I much prefer no bells, you can finish up the class and dismiss them rather than them bolting out the door on the bell.

Our less are 45 mins but lots of double lessons. They aren't allowed phones in school, so I guess they are going to ask them to wear watches although there are clocks in each classroom of course.
