Continuing from the year 12 - 13 thread.

Good luck with continuing studies, uni open days, driving tests, etc.

Grrr, errant apostrophe!

ErrolTheDragon · 17/11/2016 23:18

A bit of both - I think each college lists how many places for each subject (I suppose that depends on how many academics). DD had looked at info beforehand, and picked a few to look at - not the huge or tiny, not the most obvious 'tourist' ones like Kings, not the ones further out of town, and then I believe it was 'gut feel'.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/11/2016 23:20

Also, if they don't want to choose I think they can just go for a place in the 'pool'.

bigTillyMint · 18/11/2016 10:44

DD is horrified that some of her friends have got to go foe interviews and some even have exams (not just Oxbridge) - she is do glad she has chosen a course that doesn't appear to need them! And she now has 3 offers - 2 of theM her top 3 preferences phew! Smile

HSMMaCM · 18/11/2016 12:30

Great news btm

aginghippy · 18/11/2016 13:06

Ooh, dd received her first offer. It's AAA from Manchester.

They were quick off the mark. She received the acknowledgement of the application on Thursday morning and the offer on Friday morning.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/11/2016 13:13

That's good, BTM! Not all interviews are scary - DD's soton one was a very pleasant day and the Manchester one was fine, though she was a bit Hmm that he decided to ask her about her german gcse - I think she handled it ok though, and useful practice for the odd things that interviewers might do.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/11/2016 13:21

aginghippy - good, she must be pleased by that! I think you said upthread that she didn't think any of hers interviewed, is that correct? It seems a bit surprising that the same type of places all do for EEE and not mech (I'm just vaguely curious why different approach for similar sorts of subject with similar entry requirements)

aginghippy · 18/11/2016 13:30

She is excited and happy about it. Started looking up train times Grin

Yes that's right, she isn't expecting to have any interviews. Though now she is unsure about Southampton, because of what I said about your dd. You would think that EEE and mech would be similar, but I guess it shows that the departments really are autonomous.

ono40 · 18/11/2016 13:33

Well done to BTM and aging hippy's DDs! What did they apply for?

DS is applying for history, I don't think any of his uni's interview.

Errol, I was surprised when a friend told me her DD needed an interview for chemistry last year. She'd applied for and been offered biochem at two unis but changed her mind and they both insisted on interview.

aginghippy · 18/11/2016 13:37

She is applying for mechanical engineering.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/11/2016 14:40

Maybe they interview them for the courses with particular scope for accidentally burning down the lab.Grin

dingit · 18/11/2016 14:53

Aging, my Dd is applying for aeronautical engineering at Southampton. I was under the impresssion they didn't interview. Oh well, we shall see.

Errol, my Dd is perfectly capable of burning down a lab, after going out the other day and leaving the oven on. Brilliant news by the way of the Cambridge interview, I saw you post on the other thread.

user7214743615 · 18/11/2016 14:53

It seems a bit surprising that the same type of places all do for EEE and not mech (I'm just vaguely curious why different approach for similar sorts of subject with similar entry requirements)

Supply and demand, mostly. EEE is a bit more over-subscribed than mechanical engineering. Also departments tend to copy each other - if one EEE department interviews, a competitor EEE department is likely to do the same, as otherwise their department might be considered less selective than the first by students.

bigTillyMint · 18/11/2016 15:04

Oh dear, I was typing on my phone with no glasses!

She is applying for Sociology (all ones she has applied to want ABB bar one which wants BBB) and is predicted 3 A's - this is good for reduced stress-levels!
Ageing, I think Mancs was the same speed offering for DD!

Interviews at short notice is pretty expensive when you have to catch a train!

ono40 · 18/11/2016 16:24

DS just got his first offer (less than 24 hours), Newcastle AAA (or AAB with A in EPQ) for History, he is relieved and pleased!

ono40 · 18/11/2016 16:28

I should have said that 99% of applicants to Newcastle get an offer, he'd have been very miffed if he'd been the 1% who didn't

bigTillyMint · 18/11/2016 16:50

Well done to him, ono! Where else has he applied?

ono40 · 18/11/2016 17:14

He's applied to Leeds, Birmingham, Soton and Nottingham

ErrolTheDragon · 18/11/2016 17:25

Ono - glad he didn't have to worry for long, that was fast!Smile

Horsemad · 18/11/2016 17:51

Hey Ono, great news about Newcastle! Smile Their History talk was brilliant I remember.

DS is applying to 3 of the unis your DS has applied to and it will be History he has finally finally FINALLY decided! Grin

ono40 · 18/11/2016 19:59

Good news Horse that your DS has finally decided! Where else has he applied to?

Wouldn't it be funny if they ended up at the same place.

Horsemad · 18/11/2016 20:23

Lol, he hasn't applied anywhere yet Hmm but will be Newcastle, Leeds Liverpool and Birmingham. He's only applying for 4 because he only liked 4 out of all he visited.

ono40 · 25/11/2016 10:36

Hi everyone, I've been away for work all week so slowly decompressing now! DS has had another offer from Nottingham, AAA so although both offers are similar, he is pleased and says he has something to aim for now. This is the last weekend of EPQ, we are all thoroughly sick of it now.

dingit · 25/11/2016 11:43

Ono, sympathies. Dd hasn't even reached half way on her Epq. It's going to be a last minute stress/ panic.
