Continuing from the year 12 - 13 thread.

Good luck with continuing studies, uni open days, driving tests, etc.

Do the unis know whether you put them first or last? Sorry, I am a bit clueless about this as you can tell.

DS is wishing he had put his application in earlier (the words 'I told you so..' are not leaving my mouth, honest!)

Opinion is divided on the benefits of unconditionals as some students may take their foot off the gas and achieve lower grades than predicted.

LittleHoHum · 20/10/2016 12:33

No - the unis don't know how the student has ranked them.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/10/2016 12:52

I guess unconditionals are great for a student who finds exam grade pressure very stressful, and/or likes to feel in control of a situation?

bigTillyMint · 20/10/2016 14:54

That's my DD Errol GrinGrinGrin

HSMMaCM · 21/10/2016 08:29

Had a long chat with dd about following her boyfriend to uni. She is still aiming for that uni (which I hope will keep her grades up), but was also chatting excitedly about the years work experience in Australia she could do while she's there.

By the way. I don't know if you remember earlier this year I talked about going on holiday without her. We did it. 10 days away and when we returned all the washing was done and she hadn't missed any college. She kept in touch every day and spent a few days staying with friends and didn't even have a party. She wants to come with us next year Grin

HSM that's fantastic re the hol away! And interesting that she wants to go with you next year! Is it a poss gap year in Australia?

Parents eve was good last night - they just said she needs to relax more and be confident about what she thinks/has to say. Her PS is done and UCAS paid for - just waiting for a teacher to finish her bit off. Hooray!

Horsemad · 21/10/2016 10:19

My last ever PE last night! Shock Where has the time gone?

All ok, apart from being a tad lazy in Maths (handing homework in late).

HardcoreLadyType · 21/10/2016 13:30

I know someone who's doing a course with a gap year in Australia, HSM.

This website gives details of internships in Australia, for undergraduates as well as graduates. Your DD might find it useful?

ono40 · 21/10/2016 15:03

DS got his personal statement back from the head of sixth form so now he just needs to add it onto the UCAS system, pay the fee and then submit it so school can do the references and predictions. I think his choices will be Birmingham, Leeds, Newcastle, Southampton and Liverpool. Progress at last.

HSM if I went away for 10 days the place would be wrecked! I can barely get in his room if I am away for work for 2 days.

Last PE Horse - almost wish that was me. I have a first senior school PE coming up for DS2 who has just started.

HSMMaCM · 21/10/2016 16:44

Thanks hardcore.

Ono - no one was more surprised than me that we weren't a foot deep in washing and dirty dishes Smile

Dd has mocks in January. It's all getting a bit close.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2016 12:59

DD has the cambridge test next week - anyone else got that sort of thing on the horizon? She had a go at the one set of sample papers - ran short of time. She says she needs to revise GCSE physics so I guess that's the first half of half-term spoken for.

Fairenuff · 26/10/2016 14:21

Gosh, popping back here has reminded to check where ds is with his PS. I don't think he's finished it yet and certainly won't be putting the form to UCAS until he's finished open days next month.

teta · 27/10/2016 13:33

Dd is back from D of E and amazingly only one blister! The car smelt of the great unwashed however and I felt sorry for the other residents of their train carriage.
Does anyone know whether interviews are often done alphabetically ?Dd has no interviews yet and hasn't heard anything, but her friend has two for next week.I guess we will find out pretty soon but its so hard for them at this stage.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/10/2016 14:09

I don't know - you'd have thought it would be first come, first served. Did your DD and her friend apply to the same places at the same time for vet?

teta · 27/10/2016 15:00

Not exactly the same but more or less.
One of the vet schools screen applicants via a Situational Analysis Test and it helps if you have access to someone who can help or do the test with/for you.Dd did as much research before as possible but is obviously not an experienced vet/professional!

bigTillyMint · 27/10/2016 16:00

DD is in the library, working Shock Or so she says! Catching up after doing nothing Mon/Tues due attending big 18th party...

It seems that she and her best mate from sixthform are going to pick the same 2 unis for firm/ins for the same course depending on getting offers ConfusedSmile

teta · 27/10/2016 19:09

First interview! Her answers can't have been too bad.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/10/2016 19:10

Yay! Hopefully she'll relax a bit now. Smile

bigTillyMint · 27/10/2016 21:54

That's great, TetaSmile

teta · 28/10/2016 09:03

Bigtillymint. as I've found this week similar applications make for a rather nerve-wracking time.So its not in the short-term a good thing but maybe is in the long-term.
Yes Errol ......and me !
Am I over identifying ?

ErrolTheDragon · 28/10/2016 09:12

Teta, these threads are the natural home of the over-invested parent.Grin

teta · 29/10/2016 13:08

Too right Grin Errol.
Does anyone on this thread know the % of offers given that are not satisfied by the subsequent A level results?Does each course over-offer and how does that work out?Especially in Vet. Science where there's often a limited number of places and no places on Clearing.I can't find the information anywhere .

pericat · 29/10/2016 13:33

Tera, you may have to get that information from the Admissions tutors for each course/Uni. I know that Cambridge uni give 3 times as many offers as there are places for Maths because the STEP requirements are so high that 2/3rds of applicants fail to achieve the right grades. Put DS off applying for Cambridge.

HSMMaCM · 29/10/2016 16:12

Dd took her laptop with her when she went babysitting last night. Apparently she was planning to work on her personal statement.
