Has anyone experience of home tuition after extended school refusal?

Hi, after a long period of school refusal, CAMHS involvement and trying everything to keep him in school, we have reached the point where it's no longer an option and we need to look at home tuition. Not teaching him myself but a tutor that the LEA will hopefully grant.

It's been a long journey to this and it really is all that's left now. Does anyone have good/bad experiences of it? DS (15) is extremely clever, has ASD and extreme anxiety and still wants to do GCSEs but not in the school environment.

No, but I would be interested to talk to you about school refusal. DD has ASD, is 11 (y6) and is often late for school, and sometimes misses whole days. I am very concerned for secondary school.

My ds was a school refuser. A bit in years 3 and 4, he had a good year 5 then only did a few weeks in year 6, we withdraw him completely in the spring term of year six.

Completely the right thing for him but his underlying issues (some sort of social phobia?) has still held him back and we are only just looking at him doing a couple of GCSEs now at 19.

If your son wants to do GCSEs but doesn't want to be at school then he will be fine. Not going to school is only the 'scary' option before you do it. Once you do you will be fine. He can take his exams either with LEA involvement or if you deregister him completely then he could do exams as an external candidate but that costs money.

Dd is yr 9 and is currently having home tutoring from the LEA after 12 months of school refusal

She has aspergers and anxiety and was a very able pupil before things started going wrong for her at school

The tutors have tailored the curriculum around her to re-engage her with learning and the sessions are going really well

If needs be they can supervise gcse exams at home but the aim would be to get her into their main site

Problem is they only offer English, maths and science

I'm currently fighting for a personalised budget through an EHCP that I can use to fund additional subjects via private tutors

It's usually quite limited in hours and subjects. If he has an EHCP, you could do as PP suggests and look at spending the money on additional time/subjects.

Is he a self starter? There are bound to be programmes, Bitesize or other that he could do on his own. Or books maybe. What about the school website. Could you ask the school to put something online for him to work on at home?

Thanks all. Had a meeting today at school and if we get the tuition it will only be maths and English. Have no idea how we will pay for tuition for other GCSEs. We don't even get DLA yet. CAMHS need to be involved but the case worker we had left and there isn't a new one yet. It's all so difficult. DS very hard work at home.

I'm thinking same thing kenickiehicky, after 2 years of school refusal I can't do it any longer, I have been looking at the igcses that they do through Oxford learning yup it costs but I can't do 3 more years of this.
My only worry is like yours she's such hard work I'm not sure I can cope with her here all day!

No Bailey. My child got an hour a day lea help and tuition from tutors sent from their school.

It has been hard ( on me!) and my child couldn't do as many GCSEs as if they were at school but they do have top grades in the 8 they sat.

Any questions (anybody) I am more than happy to help. There were times I thought they would have no GCSEs and times they tried to give us no education (lea) but we got there in the end!

bumping this thread because we have been discussing similar issues in the Home Education section of Mumsnet. SN children and SN Chat often cover this as well.

I do hope everyone who needed help got it. Also GSCEs do not have to be taken at 15/16 or all at once. to everyone struggling and leaving school does not have to be a disaster. EHCP can also open way to fighting for a specialist school with smaller classes than mainstream, more suited to ASD in some cases, although this was not our pathway.
