Ds1 (Y9) is going to start GCSE History next year. He has the year 9 exams next week and they are used to set for GCSE, so he wants to do well.

Before Easter, the teacher gave the class a revision list for the exams. It was six broad topics that they've covered this year. DS1 made a revision timetable and worked his way through all the History stuff during the holidays. However, yesterday, the teacher gave the class a different revision list. Now there are three topics, all of them in the original list, but requiring much more depth.

I don't think its great that the History dept have done this (without even acknowledging the change), but is something to be concerned about? Ds1 can cope with it because he's on top of all his revision (for once), but it wouldn't be good if they were disorganised like this over the next two years.

Sadly, we've found with our son that it doesn't pay to try to get ahead of things when it comes to schools today.

Exactly the same thing has happened to our son several times, funnily enough, history being the major culprit. He's in year 3, but the same happened in both years 1 and 2, where there were revision sheets on the school's website VLE, which we coerced our son into working through, after being pointed in that direction by the teacher, only to discover, purely by chance about a week before the test each year, that they'd changed the sheets on the VLE and we'd actually been using the prior year's revision, which for some reason, needed changing because they decided to change what topics would be tested!

Same with French, the teacher had been saying for a few weeks that the test outline and summaries of what they needed to prepare would be put up on the VLE "tomorrow", but they finally appeared, literally, just 2 days before the test so he had a mad last minute panic. More annoying because they have the end of year tests a week after returning from the May half term, so he had a full week off where he could have been revising/preparing, but, no, it all has to be last minute.

We've mentioned it a few times, but it falls on deaf ears.

I know it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but the Dc are supposed to be learning to self-study and not leave everything to the last minute so its a shame when something like this happens.

Mainly though it just seems disorganised. If they can't manage this, then what else will they mess up on?
