Repeating Y12 - what would your school allow between now and September

DS1 wants to repeat Y12 as he missed his mocks and many lessons (ill health) and is now so far behind that he doesn't think that he can catch up before the exams. He wants to ask the school if they will let him leave and come back in September ready to start afresh. Would your school allow this or would they want a student to remain in school until the end of the school year?

The thought of having to remain in school until the end of the summer term is causing much stress and impeding his recovery.

We would probably insist on the student remaining for the rest of the academic year, because 16/17 year olds have to be in full time education. We may also make the student sit his AS exams, even if he's likely to resit them next year.

However, if you can speak (or preferably get DS to speak) to a sympathetic teacher (head of year/head of vi form) they may be able to find a compromise; I know we do have one year 12 not sitting AS exams due to medical conditions, but this took a lot of hard work from her head of year convincing "the powers that be" that it was the best for her.

My DD is restarting year 11 at the end of this year. She does have medical support for this and sixth form were fine. She could go in this summer but maybe doing a Princes Trust course.

Sorry that should have said year 12 of course.
