Tips on improving Spanish and German vocab for year 7 child

DS is a new year 7 and has chosen Spanish and German as his languages, he isn't a natural at languages shall we say! He did very basic French at primary but really this is his first real experience at languages. Does anyone have any ideas on how i could help him learn the vocab - i have not studied either of these languages in fact i was pretty rubbish at French 30 years ago! Is there any techniques, apps or in fact anyway that i can help? I hope that if he can grasp the basics he might enjoy it a little more!

Duolingo: free apps for both languages...

Memrise is good for vocab.

Both DCs schools have links to language sites via the school websites that they can use - often on a school membership basis, so it might be worth checking that.
However, both my DCs generally resort to the old fashioned way of handing over the list of words to be tested on! We do English to language and language to English, and sometimes writing them down too. If possible, we try to come up with English words that are similar to help remind them. I've re-learnt a lot of French since they started secondary, unfortunately I never did Spanish, but I am learning now Wink

DD has downloaded an app called Memrise (Hmm) which does many subjects including languages, she says so at least.

Try some films? Old favourites with the German / Spanish audio track? Or subtitles?
