I suppose 5 when there's 4 grades better than a 5 doesn't sound as good as a B. I do feel a bit sorry for her.

No, it didn't technically exist other than in maths, but both of the high performing state schools I work in and ds's independent school did use level 8, not exceptional performance, in marking English.
