Follow on thread from the GCSE exams and proms thread. For hand holding and recommendations of wine/chocolate/biscuits to get through the post results stuff.

Ginandtonic - that seems astonishingly low to get a B. In my day (old gimmer alert) a mark below 50% would have been a fail.

Does anyone know if AQA has published grade boundaries? DD screwed up one of her maths papers - maths is her best subject and she needs an A to do A-level.

Ripeningapples · 19/08/2015 09:46

Indeed. This time tomorrow. One more sleep.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 19/08/2015 09:49

Taken me a while to find you all as I've been malingering rather on the old exams and proms thread where I'd made myself rather comfy! Still lots of the old gang here now I see!
Wow eight pages essentially of nerves since Sunday Smile
Have to admit am feeling nervous now myself and didn't sleep so well last night. I have various worries on my mind with a family (birthday) party coming up at the weekend too - which should be nice but you know how it is!
Will be better after tomorrow I think, all being well
I may get to drop DD off at school but then she wants to go in with friends and they have plans to go and wander round the park together for a few hours afterwards apparently.
She might then give me a call to come and meet her and she'll tell me then!
Still what's a few more hours after waiting all summer huh?! Confused

hackmum · 19/08/2015 09:50

Oh, I think I've found it, but I don't understand it:

filestore.aqa.org.uk/over/stat_pdf/AQA-GCSE-GDE-BDY-JUNE-2015.PDF

They don't seem to give the mark required for A*, A etc, just the lower grades.

OddBoots · 19/08/2015 09:55

This is AQA, taken from here

I packed DS1 off to work experience this morning. He seems unbothered by everything but I can't tell if he's just hiding it or really isn't worried.

He has the day off "work" tomorrow and his boss (his father!) has said he doesn't need to go in on Friday if the results are not what "he" wants. Whether the "he" refers to his father or DS1 is not clear :o

Is anybody else looking at WJEC English Language and English Literature?

Looking at the grade boundaries for English Language Unit 4 they have

GCSE June 2015 ENGLISH LANGUAGE UNIT 4 (4944)

Grade * A B C D E F G U
UMS Grade Boundary 036 032 028 024 020 016 012 008 000
Raw Mark Grade Boundary 033 030 027 024 020 016 012 008 000

How can an A* be a UMS of 36 or a Raw Mark of 33?

I'm confused

JugglingFromHereToThere · 19/08/2015 10:14

DD is doing the NCS programme ATM, and they're planning various community activities this week and next Soup So likewise that seems to be doing a pretty good job of keeping her mind off things. She seems to be able to keep to her philosophy of "there's no point worrying" which is great Smile

WitchofScots · 19/08/2015 10:18

Sorry, it looked fine on the preview, not sure why it all squashed up.

A* 36 UMS 33 Raw
A 32 UMS 30 Raw
B 28 UMS 27 Raw
C 24 UMS 24 Raw
D 20 UMS 20 Raw
E 16 UMS 16 Raw
F 12 UMS 12 Raw
G 8 UMS 8 Raw

for WJEC Eng. Lang. Unit 4.
Why do low? Or do you have to combine units? Sorry, I'm new to all this.

OP posts:
titchy · 19/08/2015 10:52

Yes units are combined to make certificates, and units are not equally weighted, so the UMS score takes this into account (upscaled like your example for units that contribute more to the overall grade, and reduced for units that are not as heavily weighted).

titchy · 19/08/2015 10:53

The maximum mark available for your example looks to be 40.

WitchofScots · 19/08/2015 11:10

titchy thanks. So if there are 4 units listed and 2 have the scores for C to G only and 2 have the scores for A to D only then presumably two are foundation and two are higher and they would do both units for the whole GCSE? Sorry to be dense, WJEC don't explain it at all :(

Theas18 · 19/08/2015 11:21

Oh heck.... less than 24hrs

So glad this is my last one through this particular hurdle ( which is exacly what I thought 5yrs ago at 11+ results time!)

titchy · 19/08/2015 11:27

I'd guess so! Do you have a list of exam entries? I've used that to work out how many units each GCSE was made up of.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 19/08/2015 11:34

It's my first one (of two) Theas
So feeling quite a big thing ATM
Still we've pretty much kept the nerves at bay from finishing exams til now so I don't think that's too bad!

tbtc20 · 19/08/2015 11:38

I've never really understood all the grade boundary stuff.

Anyway, just checking in again after password hoo haa.

GloriaSmud · 19/08/2015 11:46

Morning all ~ yes, less than 24 hours to go.
DD1 (first one of 3DDs to do this ~ I've got to go through this two more times!?!) seems OK and is singing away in her bedroom at the moment. I'm doing 'Operation Distraction Techniques' today ~ car's looking very clean now and will be cutting the grass a bit later!

Theas18 · 19/08/2015 11:49

Juggling and gloria every bg hurdle with the eldest is so hard and important, from starting reception to A levels and degrees. By DC3 you are cool about it and know that pretty much anything can happen and it'll not be the end of the world, but the child doesn't really get that as it's the 1st time for them! ( and in our case they are uber competitive too!)

JugglingFromHereToThere · 19/08/2015 11:58

You mean there's more?!
Just kidding!

wakeupandsmellthecoffee · 19/08/2015 11:58

Seriously this wait is killing me. DS seems fine .
So have I got it right they have lowered the expected marks for maths ?

OddBoots · 19/08/2015 12:02

I need to take my own advice and distract myself. These grade boundaries are driving me nuts and ds's school doesn't let them in to get results until after 11am tomorrow.

JugglingChaotically · 19/08/2015 12:21

Theas - thanks for those words of wisdom! DD is first of 3 so it is all v stressy.
One day to go.

tbtc20 · 19/08/2015 12:25

Can someone explain the interest in grade boundaries?

Are you interested because you know how many points your DCs got in some papers or coursework already and therefore know what they need to get tomorrow?

They just get given a grade tomorrow, right?

WitchofScots · 19/08/2015 12:27

DD has just got home from her voluntary work and has snapped at me, sworn at some random item of furniture and burst into tears saying she doesn't know what she is worrying about because she's not that worried about the exams Hmm She's now decluttering her room into heaps of black bin bags and doesn't want company.

Savagebeauty · 19/08/2015 12:40

I've just bought 20 cans of cider for DS and mates tomorrow evening.
