Follow on thread from the GCSE exams and proms thread. For hand holding and recommendations of wine/chocolate/biscuits to get through the post results stuff.

This is a transitional year. Like someone above mine has 1 old system 2 new and their school is going to 4 AS in every subject anyway whether new or old system which is probably sensible for now although it doesn't give you the relaxed lower sixth year and a summer without external exams I had in my day which is a pity. My two seem very happy in the sixth form so far. They start driving lessons next month.

ono40 · 22/09/2015 13:30

Dingit sounds like it's a good job I was too busy to watch Doc Martin [rushes to download it on catch up]!

SoupDragon · 22/09/2015 13:59

You made him go to school with an IV cannula in his arm? now that is hardcore parenting! :o

Hope he recovered quickly.

I am also a take-two-paracetamol kind of mother...

HSMMaCM · 22/09/2015 15:52

Haha. My DD was dying last night. Sick, couldn't breathe, sore throat, you name it she had it. I gave her a bottle of water to take to school this morning Grin. Shortly after 10, I get a text saying, "sick" and I ask

  1. Sick, pick me up from the nurse now
  2. Sick, pick me up when my lessons have finished at 1:30
  3. Sick, I'll be coming home on the bus later and straight to bed

She replied, "No! Sick, this is a sick lesson" (a great lesson to the grown ups among us) Grin.

ono40 · 23/09/2015 11:36

HSM Love it! Get us, we are down with the kids Wink

JugglingFromHereToThere · 24/09/2015 19:00

Hiya! Just back after days in the wilderness with MN "off-line"
How long were you all off for? Feel like it was just me!
I got back by clicking a link on an email MN sent me
Haven't checked yet whether it just works the normal way too!
Have been discussing autumn colours and favourite seasons on Gransnet - they're very poetic and encouraging over there.
But it's not the same!

SugarPlumTree · 24/09/2015 19:21

Flipping heck Juggling, you couldn't get on all that time ? Shock Week a bit blurry so lost track of when it came back up but pretty sure it was ok yesterday.

SugarPlumTree · 24/09/2015 19:22

WineWineWine for you

spudmasher · 24/09/2015 22:08

How is everyone doing?
DD has a Freshers Ball next weekend......most of the kids are 18 plus and the college has a degree course so I suppose it's normal? She will be collected by her dad at eleven while everyone else goes off clubbing in London. It's fancy dress. She's going as the music box from Phantom of the Opera. I was hoping she'd get another wear out of the gold sequinned prom number........she could have gone as a.......gold shiny thing.

HSMMaCM · 24/09/2015 22:37

DD volunteered for sixth form open evening tonight, recruiting new year 11s to go to her sixth form next year. 3 of her teachers asked for her help, so she must be doing okay.

bigTillyMint · 25/09/2015 08:10

Wow spud and HSM, that sounds fab! DD would be soEnvy - it seems that the new recruits to the sixth form she has gone to are having trouble integrating, so there now seems to be something of an us and them culture. I hope that it can be turned around.

Hi Juggling!

ono40 · 25/09/2015 14:30

Yay, MN is back online after 2 days! DS much recovered and off to Derbyshire on Sunday for DofE with lots of reminders about taking antibiotics and drinking fluids.

BTM what is the sixth form doing to encourage integration? At DS' school there are about 50 newbies and they all seem to be fitting in well as they've mixed the forms (Yr 12&13) and they all have to do liberal studies on a Wed afternoon and work with someone they haven't worked with previously.

Idefix · 25/09/2015 14:54

Another week done Smile
Pleased to read that there have been some positive weeks for everyone.
This week has been quite quiet, no mn and nasty virus, ds settling nicely into a good routine with his studies. Dd on dofe till Sunday.
Looking forward to a quiet night in and a Wine
Have a good weekend everyone

HSMMaCM · 25/09/2015 17:35

DD has two essays to write, a monologue to learn and a drama script to develop this weekend. She has two parties planned and we have just had a debate about priorities. She's pretty sensible and knows the final result is down to her efforts and not mine.

I'm planning to eat pizza and drink wine.

SugarPlumTree · 25/09/2015 17:47

We have ended the week on a positive note. DD has changed to Photography which finally happened halfway through Wednesday. As she only had Maths Thursday and nothing Friday this means she has only had a few lessons but she really enjoyed them. Found what she is doing interesting and the people much nicer with better boy/girl ratio. Very helpfully the two girls she got to know on Wednesday live pretty locally, one catches the same bus. The College is in next county and people come from miles in either direction so pleased there are a couple of new people locally.

She caught the train back lunchtime yesterday and came home via the pier which she needed photos of. The bus has been fine for her though some other poor boy has not had a good time. I think it might be third time lucky on the course front

I hope they all end the week happy and aren't too tired. Pizza and wine sounds excellent idea. I'm trying to get the energy up to go out later with friend who has twins in year 12 to catch up .

JugglingFromHereToThere · 25/09/2015 17:59

I'm feeling a bit like that HSM that it's a bit more up to her how things go now she's in sixth form. She's got some good GCSE results and her place in a good sixth form (in same school she's been in throughout, so also with some lovely friends) I'm sure she will do well enough to get a place on a course that interests her at a good Uni. Three weeks in and so far so good (notwithstanding some very late nights finishing homework) I'm almost tempted to relax slightly regarding DD at least for now and accept that Wine - would that be so wicked and irresponsible ?!

bigTillyMint · 25/09/2015 18:11

Glad that everyone seems to be settling in.

DD seems reasonably upbeat despite the not-mixing. The school did do a team-building day early on and they all work together in lessons... hopefully things will gradually change over time.
She has just been catching up with old mates and is off out with her BFF's for something to eat this eveningSmile

Definitely time for a Wine!

Grazia1984 · 25/09/2015 20:58

Mine say so far it's easier than GCSE (I had given dire warnings of how hard A level is) and are getting a lot of homework done in school study periods and lunch breaks so far so so far so good.

Auntpetunia2015 · 27/09/2015 11:20

Hey lost you all for a few days. Things going ok here, DS is doing all his work in school he says, but he was quite happy with their first psychology test he got an A. Hope everyone's ok

bigTillyMint · 27/09/2015 17:20

Well done AuntP's DSStar

SugarPlumTree · 28/09/2015 14:24

Well done mini Petunia !

Just in case it helps anyone, you can get a student railcard with Tesco Clubcard vouchers.

Auntpetunia2015 · 28/09/2015 17:02

H sugar there is nothing mini about my DS he's then 6ft 4 one!!

SugarPlumTree · 28/09/2015 17:36

Flipping heck, that is quite a height!

bigTillyMint · 28/09/2015 19:03

Wow, he doesn't look that tall in the photos! And he's a very handsome chap - shame we're not nearer, or I'd introduce my tiny DD - she likes the tall boysGrin

HSMMaCM · 28/09/2015 19:40

DD got an A for her first psychology essay. She's really chuffed because she was worried about it.
