Follow on thread from the GCSE exams and proms thread. For hand holding and recommendations of wine/chocolate/biscuits to get through the post results stuff.

My dd didn't immerse herself in languages after her gcse's and she went on to get two A* in both her MFLs at A level.

All she did over the holidays was watch a couple of foreign films and read over her vocab the week before she went back to school.

Everyone is different, no point in criticising one way just because it's a different approach. You just make yourself sound narrow minded and a little bit silly.

Auntpetunia2015 · 24/08/2015 10:52

Just double checked with DS that he had either done or not gotten any holiday homeworK. He hadn't and didn't get any when he went up to 6th form day . So klingons being killed is still the way to go! Only a week left so time to sort DDs uniform, only need pinafores blazer will last another year.

SugarPlumTree · 24/08/2015 10:54

Bobo I was going to do a German degree and started German A level (was ill so didn't finish). My post O Level summer consisted of 2 heavenly weeks in France with friend and her parents and my summer job. Not a word of German passed my lips and it was fine starting A level, no one in my class had been to Germany.

Personally I find translation very helpful for keeping my hand in. My Aunt has been writing to me about a sensitive family matter and it has definitely helped my very rusty German. Everyone's different aren't they but lovely for your DC that you've worked out the best way forward for your DC just as Shegotitall has for hers.

Oh Soupy your lucky DS !!

DD came down to announce 1) she will be doing some Art homework in a bit 2) We are running low on soup ingredients.

noblegiraffe · 24/08/2015 10:57

Sugar sorry that your DD didn't get her C, but good to hear she is headed in the right direction :)

Did you see the thread I posted about resit maths?

SanityClause · 24/08/2015 11:05

Oh, Soup!

Well, let's face it, he's got to get used to it (again). It's too easy to forget those dreary rainy training sessions and matches, after a few lovely matches at the end of the season, in the spring.

I'm pleased to say, DS has decided to give up rugby, outside of school. Hooray!

mummytime · 24/08/2015 11:05

Oh DD's politics homework was to fill in an online questionaire thing (so they can see where people are coming from - I already know informally they will welcome her as she is very left wing, and most people around here are more right wing), and write a page or two on what "Democracy" means.

SheGotAllDaMoves · 24/08/2015 11:08

soup DD is at LAX training Shock.

It is pouring here!

Auntpetunia2015 · 24/08/2015 13:12

sugar ooh soup making. What's brought that on?

SugarPlumTree · 24/08/2015 13:23

Thank you Noblegiraffe I hadn't seen that. Have told her she needs to start, she's very negative about it, I need a think - ideally a good tutor but haven't had much luck fndng one she's clicked with.

AP soup making restarted just before results and I guess today's weather is definitely conducive to it !

Auntpetunia2015 · 24/08/2015 13:52

?? (? Today's weather sugar is gorgeous, lunch in the garden and then I might just read for the rest of the afternoon. .. (feeling lazy) only a week left of school holidays. Xxx

Lucky you AP! It's so wet here, I had to wear Wellies then change T shirt after dog walk. Was even sort of thinking about lighting the fire as still feel wet and cold.

Can't help feeling I should be doing something to prepare for start of term. DS had a nightmare about school last week which doesn't bode well and I feel quite guilty as think we dropped the ball with him over the whole secondary/grammar school thing, vaguely contemplating starting a thread. I just really hope DD settles well and we get over any teething problems quickly as don't feel I've really recharged my batteries and we still have parent issues looming.

bigTillyMint · 24/08/2015 14:10

AuntPEnvy - the rain is only in the South I think!

We are now into Reading Festival preparations...

SugarPlumTree · 24/08/2015 14:22

That will be a good note to finish the holidays on BTM, though possibly not so good on your nerves whilst she's there !

SanityClause · 24/08/2015 14:41

So are we, Tilly.

DD1 was telling me yesterday how some of the group smoke weed. (These are girls she knows who go to a well known private school.)

Gaaaah!

I think she'll be sensible, though. She's just been off on a trip where some group members got into trouble for drinking, but she wasn't amongst them. We talked about how you don't have to justify not doing it, just say "I don't want to."

She knows other people who will be there, so hopefully she can find them, if she gets in a pickle.

SoupDragon · 24/08/2015 15:32

No lunch in the garden here!

I've just shared the car with three sodden teenage boys. lovely!

Hi all, checking in before the website goes down again.
Good to hear that it's all ramping up with sports practise and homework. Good to get those cogs whirring again! I clearly remember the feeling of starting back in September- after the first day, it feels like you've never been away, but it's a bit bit different for them this year!
DD is preparing by attending 4 classes in a row at Pineapple. She's got assessments all the first week to determine her grouping. She also has to prepare a song. A bit different, but homework nonetheless......

Lots of her friends are off to Reading, but she's not. She never even asked and I think she's regretting that now. It would have taken her mind off next week!

The rain is getting me down!

HSMMaCM · 25/08/2015 14:06

Spud - DD is going to reading festival and I'd love to give someone else her ticket Grin. She might never forgive me though.

I think we are going to end up with her dance, drama, psychology and classical studies A levels. At least she'll enjoy them and hopefully get into dance college and become a rich and famous performer. That's the plan anyway Grin.

ono40 · 25/08/2015 15:53

DS has been up away doing DofE silver practice (he missed the school one as we were on holiday), quick turnaround and off to Reading tomorrow. Why does the earlybird ticket let them in two full days before the music starts? It certainly wouldn't be my idea of fun to spend 5 wet and cold nights in a tent in a muddy field but then I'm not a teenager! I have no idea he needs to take so no doubt I'll be doing a midnight Tesco run. I've looked on various sites and they just say whatever you take will be stolen. I need to issue dire warning about not taking BBQs into tents due to CO poisoning.

Not to mention that sixth form choices need to be submitted by 12 noon tomorrow and he still hasn't decided on his fourth, not has he been here to discuss it. School is not teaching standalone AS because they bear no relation to the new full A-level courses apparently so it will be a mix of new A-level courses (English and History) plus some old style AS/A2 (Govt&Politics).

And I still haven't figured out where to buy the sixth form tie. Roll on next Friday!

LineyReborn · 25/08/2015 16:47

DS just enrolled at College to do his preferred A levels (maths and sciences) and I feel weight lifted...

Thanks again for all the help and support. It made a massive difference. Smile

This is a lovely thread on a great site and I despair of all the hacking attacks and, frankly, some of the sniping from actual posters.

bigTillyMint · 25/08/2015 16:47

HSM, DD is going too!

Ono we have Sixthform woes roo - DD is supposed to enrol at her "first" choice at 9.30am tomorrow bit she is massively anxious and still has 4th essay to finish. And she has a busy evening. Really not sure how it is all going to pan out. Confused

LineyReborn · 25/08/2015 16:49

Tilly, enrolling should be fairly straightforward hopefully. Are you going with her?

bigTillyMint · 25/08/2015 17:30

Thanks. We have her Godsis staying si I think DD would like her to go with her, if she goes. No idea what will happen re the essay and the other 3 need printing. She hasn't had any help on the homework, it's the anxiety that's the problemSad

dingit · 25/08/2015 18:06

Bigtilly, my dd was very anxious about sixth form enrolment, mainly about choosing subjects. I did go with her ( as she needed to be driven). I have to say they couldn't have been nicer. I thought they may be a bit grammar school stuffy, but they really helped her, and everything seemed to slot into place. She's now really excited. Smile

bigTillyMint · 25/08/2015 18:15

Thats great dingit. Unfortunately the enrolment is the least of the problem - she is very anxious about starting afresh (particularly after taster day - pastoral support v different) but is keen to move on IYSWIM.

dingit · 25/08/2015 18:53

I understand completely Bigtilly. Although excited, dd will be a nervous wreck next week! To add to her anxiety, she starts her Saturday job this weekend. Suddenly she is going to have to grow up, argh!
