any advice whether to repeat year 10?

My DD missed most of year 10 through illness, she hopes to go back to a slightly reduced timetable in September. She had been predicted mostly Bs with a couple of As for GCSE, but realistically will be very lucky to get Cs now. I wondered if she would be better to repeat Year 10, although she is resistant to this idea. Any thoughts?

Is she at state school? I'm a teacher and have never seen a school allow this.

I've only ever known 1 student who has repeated a year, but he missed close to a full year and he was a lot younger than your DD and therefore didn't really impact on the social aspects (i.e. his friendship group was this year as he had been with them for so long) so I am not surprised she is not happy with the idea

The funding/league table aspect would be the biggest hurdle from a school's point of view.

I'd be very surprised if the school allowed this. Have you talked to them?

Would she consider dropping a few subjects to concentrate on catching up on the ones that will be most important (maths, English, science and things that will be relevant to her career plans?). You could consider using tutors to help her.

I too have never heard of a state school permitting a student to repeat a year. My friend's daughter missed most of Y11, but nevertheless she did her GCSEs at the end of it. Has the school been providing support while your daughter was off?

The school won't allow it because funding is based on age, not year. That means that if she repeats year 10 then the school will get no money for her for year 11.

We've allowed some students to go back a year.

Is she well now? Will the illness reoccur? Could you afford to get her tutors for some subjects? What have the school suggested?

I don't know who I'd need to discuss it with at school. She was in school for the last couple of weeks, and told them she wanted to take her GCSEs as planned, so that's the arrangement for now. I don't think she'd manage school and tutoring on top, and I was just thinking that she'd have a better outcome without the stress of knowing she'd missed much of the curriculum

Yes she could repeat a year. I've known rare students do this.

Alternatively she could drop some subjects and continue in the same year while working to catch up.

How many subjects does she need to have to continue on to A levels?

Probably the head of year 11 would be your best bet. Or contact her form tutor with your concerns and they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Repeating a year at that age has been shown to reap benefits, big benefits, in later life. ie leadership and confidence are significantly boosted.

That's interesting Casimir, she is quite young for her age anyway. Where would I look for that information?

We have several students who have retaken year 10, and some retaking year 11. State comp. funding is available for legitimate reasons. I would ask as it is tough to make up year 10 in the 7 months of teaching that is year 11. Good luck

The GCSEs in 2017 will be different from the GCSEs in 2016. The exams in 2017 will be a different syllabus for Maths & English and potentially more difficult.

It is possible in state schools. Just rare. Contact school to discuss.

DS1 has missed a lot of work in Y9 and Y10 as a result of long-term illness, but the plan is for him to continue with his current year group and do his GCSEs in 2016. It helps that the school have been very supportive.

I retook yr10. Different circumstances though, we moved across the country and new school used different exam boards so subject matter was totally different. I was one of the youngest in the year who became the oldest.

I had to take several subjects that I had no interest in as the classes were full as options had already been set. The main subjects I did well in though.
I think your Dd needs to be fully on board with the plan though.

She could repeat it, having been absent so much through illness. Delighted to hear that she is better.

From the information you've given, I would recommend repeating. However, speak to the school and see what they say too. Good luck to both of you with whatever you decide in the end.
