Same as the girls and boys at DD's school, which also insists that blazers are worn at all times. They either wear nothing, a hoodie underneath (no school jumpers/cardigans) or a coat that goes over the blazer.

Forgetmenotblue · 04/08/2015 08:17

Nothing.

Most teenagers would rather die than wear a coat. Too babyish or something.

Get him an umbrella. Don't waste your money on a coat, it won't be worn.

Maybe get a plain v neck jumper to go under the blazer for warmth.

ButterflyUpSoHigh · 04/08/2015 08:17

Ours wear a jumper underneath but never a coat on top.

AuntieStella · 04/08/2015 08:18

On the journey to school?

Nothing, usually. In theory, a cagoule or a coat. In practice, a coat on a teen is a rarity. A collapsible umbrella might be useful for wet days (with a plastic bag, as there may be nowhere to leave it - of indeed hang wet coats - at school).

LeChien · 04/08/2015 08:19

Nothing, ds would rather freeze to death than wear anything else over the top, no idea why, but his reaction to me suggesting a coat is similar to if I suggested him wearing fancy dress for the day.
He tends to layer up underneath it though.

happy2bhomely · 04/08/2015 08:26

Never a coat on top. Ever.

In the very cold weather he will wear a long sleeve thermal top under a long sleeve shirt with his blazer. Then he wears a hat and scarf and gloves. But never a coat. Sometimes I have managed to convince him to take a compact umbrella if it's pouring down.

For a while he wore a hoody under his blazer for the journey to school, but the school sent out newsletters telling us it was against the rules.

DD's school is on the edge of the Pennines and a lot of students walk to school. So seeing a teenager in a coat in winter is not as much of a rarity as some places. Also, during the last couple of winters wearing a khaki parka over the blazer has been a bit of a fashion thing with the girls.

DD won't wear a coat because there isn't enough time after school for her to go to her locker and collect it and catch the bus, and some teachers get their knickers in a twist about students carrying their coats around.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 04/08/2015 08:35

Nothing, my DSes refuse to wear coats.

Orangeanddemons · 04/08/2015 08:41

I'm not sure a school can stop a kid wearing a hoody outside of school can they?

LilyTucker · 04/08/2015 08:41

This is really helpful, have boys going into year 7. Seems strange as they have to wear their blazer all day so surely they won't feel the benefit when they go out without a coat at break times.Confused

I'm aware I sound uber pfbish.Grin

I think a lot of school uniform rules are ridiculous. At DD's school the students have to keep their blazers on when walking around in the public areas. They are allowed to take them off in classrooms and when eating their lunch. Only in very hot weather are they allowed to leave them in their lockers.

Many work places, mine included, have much more relaxed dress codes so these rules aren't always representative of the real world.

mummytime · 04/08/2015 08:48

At DCs school, they can ask to remove blazers, and do remove them pretty much always for some lessons (eg. Science, DT and Art).
They have an optional jacket which can be worn over the blazer (and used to have a fleece), but few do. Some have a non-regulation hoodie which they were to and from school. They can wear jumpers or cardigans under the blazer (school ones only).

Few actually wear coats/fleeces etc.

But break times are shorter and can be spent inside (in fact are often spent queueing for a snack/lunch).

A nearby school does have breaks in which people play football, and does also have students who wear coats - neither happen at my DCs school.

Ishouldbeweaving · 04/08/2015 08:54

It may also depend on whether they have lockers at school, ours doesn't so there's nowhere to put a coat anyway. As others have said, DS has the option of a plain V neck under the blazer but he'll never wear anything over the top of it. If it's raining he'll take an umbrella.

Orangeanddemons · 04/08/2015 09:05

But I don't understand. Schools have no legal responsibility for bullying outside school, teachers have no responsibility for dc when they have left the school gate, so how can the school insist on these uniform rules outside school? I think if you pushed it they would have to back down (and I'm a secondary school teacher!)

Sparklingbrook · 04/08/2015 09:06

No coats here. Even when DS1 had a locker he still didn't. Don't go buying one unless you are sure it will be worn.

iwantgin · 04/08/2015 09:14

DS didn't wear a coat once in his five years of blazer wearing. He did put on a long sleeved thermal under his shirt if it was freezing. And I mean freezing. There is an optional schooljumper which can be worn under blazer but he refused to wear his (even though I'd already bought it).

So save your money op.

SelfRaisingFlour · 04/08/2015 09:15

D's wears a black cagoule over his blazer if it's raining or on winter mornings when it is really cold. He won't wear a proper coat. The cagoule folds into a bag so it doesn't take much space in his rucksack.

mummytime · 04/08/2015 09:57

Orangeanddemons that may be what your school tells you, but my DCs school does deal with bullying outside of school, patrols bus stops etc., and deals with issues such as cyber bullying.

If someone brings shame on the Uniform, which means it both has to be identifiable as a particular school's uniform, as well as missworn, is punishable by detentions etc. as for in school crimes. Bad behaviour outside school is dealt with by assemblies, but may also bring police involvement if necessary.

Of course I'd known few students actually be punished for incorrect wearing of ties or rolled up skirts, outside of school - but they are all informed it could happen when they start (and teachers do take on duties of patrolling bus stops after school).

SoupDragon · 04/08/2015 10:00

No idea what they wear at school but both DSs have happily worn coats (voluntarily! I've never had to force them). Usually Superdry ones but DS1 (16) requested a River Island parker this year.

They have lockers which I think makes a difference.

Orangeanddemons · 04/08/2015 10:28

No, some schools do deal with stuff outside school, but the legal requirement is their responsibility stops at the school gate, apart from a 10 minute dismissal duty. So they don't legally have a leg to stand on as far as uniform outside the school is concerned. I think I'm still correct, I know Gove talked about changing it, but I don't know if he did.

They can ask that school uniform be worn in a certain way outside school hours, but they can't enforce it. Am happy to be corrected, but I'm fairly sure.

Cloud2 · 04/08/2015 10:43

Surprised to see so many DC not wearing coat. My DS1 walks to school , he has to wear coat during cold days and raining days. He has a rain coat with attached fleece, so he can add on the fleece during winter. He would leave his coat and bag in the locker. I think he visits his locker a lot to change books from the locker when he go to different classroom.

I boughte a V neck school jumper for him, but he didn't use it. As it would be too hot once he get into the building.

NaiceViper · 04/08/2015 10:43

They do have a leg to stand on.

Simply that, whilst pupils are in uniform, they can insist it must be worn correctly.

But nothing whatsoever prevents a pupil from changing (completely) out of uniform when off the premises. ('completely' here meaning 'to the point at which the school can no longer be identified' which might mean more than just taking a tie off).

horsewalksintoabar · 04/08/2015 10:48

DS cycles to school so needs a coat in winter. He has a really cool, nice looking, light down coat. It's very lightweight but because it's filled with down it keeps him warm and he can just roll it up and put it in his backpack. Either that or a down gilet like Northface or something cheaper. TK Maxx has great lightweight, cool looking winter coats and gilets.

Housemum · 04/08/2015 10:51

Soupy - lockers make a difference, a Superdry coat would last seconds otherwise! DD2 hasn't worn a coat at all during her first year at secondary. DD1 did for a term, just a New Look coat so nice but not designer, it disappeared within a month (despite name labels) never to be seen again.

mummytime · 04/08/2015 10:52

At DCs school, if they remove the tie, and Blazer - then it would be hard to be sure of the school. Some Uniforms it might involve more thorough changing (Blouses and Skirts can be very distinctive).
