DS wears a black north face jacket. His school encourage them to take off their ties & leave their blazers at school as they have problems with the boys being mugged. They don't have to wear their blazers much though, only for certain assemblies. In the summer they don't have to wear ties or blazers when it's hot.

clary · 04/08/2015 12:02

Superdry coat. Maybe. If it's pouring or really cold. Or a plain jumper underneath the blazer but non of my 3 have ever needed one.

Just asked DD (14 but not cool!) and she says people wear coats from November to Feb if it's cold.

School says coat must be black or navy with no logos but they seem to accept Superdry and similar as "no logoes" is actually impossible :)

meditrina · 04/08/2015 12:09

"as "no logoes" is actually impossible"

Try John Lewis. They have no-logo ones (waterproof with zip in/out lining) in both black and navy up to age 16 (chest 38").

Actually, it is made very clear at the open evening that on accepting a place at the school, we have to sign an agreement that school uniform will be worn correctly, and in full, on the way to and from school.

We are told that the students are representatives of the school and if we don't like it, feel free to apply to a different school. No exceptions are made and they have been known to 'force' students to colour in logo's with a sharpie and even cut buckles and labels etc from shoes.

Teachers parole the side streets after school, often accompanied by CPO's, and take names of students not following the rules or being anti social and letters are sent home.

We are in London.

Mine has this this one from VikingKids. He gets cold and they're properly waterproof too (I have a coat from there as well and won't go anywhere without it in winter).

Happy36 · 04/08/2015 14:47

I suggest a jumper under the blazer and a vest under the shirt in cold weather. If it´s raining, an umbrella (or a cagoule...if he will wear one). Also a scarf and a beanie hat, both in plain, dark colours - again, if he will wear them. Don´t spend much money as they will get lost.

In my experience, many secondary students in the U.K. don´t like to wear coats. If your son is in the minority that will, something like a padded gilet, or ski type jacket would probably be best. Make sure it´s named twice and that he knows the severe consequences of losing it; it should go straight in the locker when he arrives at school!

wooldonor · 04/08/2015 14:53

I've never seen anyone wearing anything on top of a blazer, I would guess that would look and feel uncomfortable.

I'd go for a jumper underneath on cold days and on wet days it depends how long he would be outside for. My children go on a school bus and only have a 1/4 mile walk to the stop, they don't like raincoats or brollies so just run I think

Bunbaker · 04/08/2015 17:26

"At DCs school, if they remove the tie, and Blazer - then it would be hard to be sure of the school."

It wouldn't be difficult to work out which school the students go to if they are seen in the local market town at 3pm as there is only one school there and it finishes at 2.50.

FundamentalistQuaker · 04/08/2015 17:52

Nothing.
Thermals or Underarmour underneath.

Branleuse · 04/08/2015 17:57

i got ds a gilet/bodywarmer in the same colour as the blazer. Apparently coats werent allowed, but noone said anything.

Ludways · 04/08/2015 18:02

Y7 he'd wear a vneck jumper underneath but never since, he's too cool for modern comforts!!

caringdad66 · 04/08/2015 19:12

Nothing..shirt,pullover and blazer.....kids don't wear coats past 11 yrs old.

Essexmum69 · 04/08/2015 19:30

DS has always worn a coat and most do at his school. He currently has a black pea coat over his suit. When younger he had a 3 in 1 style from an outdoor shop bought one size larger to fit over his blazer.

BareGrylls · 04/08/2015 19:31

A blazer is a coat.Mine used to just wear a fleece for uniform. If they ever took a coat it was a problem because there was nowhere to leave it and they weren't allowed to have them hung on back of chair Hmm

Mominatrix · 04/08/2015 21:12

Ds wears a jumper underneath, and down gilet on top. The gilet crumples down to a small size (uniqlo) and he shoves it into his rucksack.

MilkRunningOutAgain · 04/08/2015 23:30

DS has just finished yr 7 and has never worn a coat. I bought a jumper but he won't wear it, I won't buy another! No lockers available. The school says all children wearing uniform are ambassadors for the school and must behave well; detentions are given for poor behaviour outside the school premises. No idea whether anyone has challenged this. School deals extremely effectively with bad behaviour outside school, and inside too. Blazers must be worn in school, and on the way in and the way home. Most teachers let kids take blazers off in class.

var123 · 06/08/2015 22:06

a jumper if absolutely necessary. A base layer if sub zero but ds would have to move to Siberia before he'd consider breaking ranks and wearing anything over his blazer!

goinggetstough · 07/08/2015 09:15

At our school most of the boys wear coats over their blazers. Not all of them have lockers, so carry them round with them all day. The coats range from Superdry to cagoules and everything in between. The majority of the comments on this thread say no one wears coats but it might not be true for your school. Pupils won't need coats when they go back in September so there is time to look and ask older pupils.

MrsUltracrepidarian · 07/08/2015 09:29

Nothing, ds would rather freeze to death than wear anything else over the top, no idea why, but his reaction to me suggesting a coat is similar to if I suggested him wearing fancy dress for the day.
Same here! Do not waste money on a coat
You cld get a cag for when it is raining.
The comp I teach in insists that DC wear blazers all the time. I take pity on them on hot days an tell them to take them off in the classroom, but they have to wear them in the corridors etc and to and from school.
My own DC school (famous old public school) only expects the to wear blazers occasionally for formal events, and forbids them form wearing them outside school (mugging risk) - the boys keep them in their lockers.

starfish4 · 07/08/2015 15:21

I know you're asking about boys, but my DD said she'd wear a coat during the first year if it was black and in all fairness she did wear it. Didn't want a coat after that as school bags are very heavy. She does have a pack-a-mac and umbrella, and there are times when she's needed them. Pack-a-mac and hoodies are fairly popular here among boys and girls, but some don't use anything else and do get soaked through to the skin.

htm123 · 13/08/2015 16:46

We bought from SGS Official Uniform Shop a 3 in 1 black coat but they also have foldable waterproof Macs.

cressetmama · 14/08/2015 20:50

DS wore a navy pea coat through Y10 and 11, and is looking for the next one already............ Sherlock Holmes style.

overthemill · 14/08/2015 20:52

Teenagers don't wear coats. I have no idea why this is because they are always cold. And wet. They seem to start wearing coats again at about 20.

bigTillyMint · 14/08/2015 23:32

Mine only wore their blazer with/without a school jumper underneath in Y7. No coat at all.

Now DS either wears a hoodie under or puts his blazer in his bag and wears a puffer/other sports thing. If he takes his blazerHmm

DD used to do the same.

Verbena37 · 15/08/2015 21:18

Our secondary is just introducing stupid blazers. The HT said they had to wear them all the time and if they wanted to remove them in the heat, they'd have to ask permission and the teacher would decide whether they could Hmm.

So I wrote to the HT and said that my children needed to remove their blazer they would. Yes, they might ask but if they are ever refused, I said I'd be fuming. A teacher cannot tell hw warm another person is and at work, staff do not have to ask permission to remove items of clothing due to changes in temperature. The armed forces don't even have 'summer dress' anymore.

I actually hate blazers, not because they don't look smart (I'm sure they do) but because when you're wanting kids to get on and do work, they really don't need an uncomfortable, polyester blazer getting in the way. I'd have thought that for science, they'd have to remove them.

I was cross that a blazer means in winter you have to buy another coat to go over the blazer. Another expense!
