How many subjects/teachers in English Year 7?

Do you mean just for English Language and Literature? Or do you mean how many different subjects will a pupil in year 7 do? And if so do you want people to include subjects that are done of rotation (some schools will rotate design or tech subjects, so pupils study say a term of art, a term of graphics and a term of resistant materials - all different teachers but the same timetable slot).

Yes, I mean in England in Year 7 ie all subjects. I'm particularly interested in how many specialist teachers a DC encounters per year, whether or not a subject is taught throughout the year.

17 subjects for mine when in year 7 & 8. Here we go : maths, english, science, french, Spanish, Latin, history, geography, rs, art, drama, music, DT, it, pe, textiles, food. Pretty normal for KS3.

At ds' state school in Scotland it is 15 in the 1st Year of Secondary: English, Maths, 2xMFL, History, Geography, Science, Computing Science, Art, Drama, Music, RME, PE, Home Economics, Techie (that's what he called it: not just technical drawing as they also made wood and metal pieces).

All taught by specialist teachers: in Scotland you're not allowed to teach a subject unless you have a degree and PGE qualification in it.

17 excluding Games when they have have different coaches for each sport, so typically 5 different coaches per year. He also has time with his form tutor each day but she isn't one of his subject teachers.

I forgot one - Modern Studies (a Scottish version of Politics/Current Affairs) . That takes it to 16.

My children had English, Maths, History, Science (3 subject specialists), Geography, RE, Sport X 3, Art, MFL x 2 (French and Italian), Technology, Music, Drama, ICT, Keyboard skills (short course) plus optional music, dance and drama lessons. Lots!

In y7 dd did the following subjects (one teacher per subject unless stated):
English (2 teachers).
Maths
Science ( 2 teachers one Chemistry and Biology the other for Physics)
RE
Geography
History
PE ( 2 teachers one for swimming the other for outdoor sport e.g. hockey).
ICT
Art
DT (done on a rota basis one subject per term: Food Tech, Resistant Materials, Textiles each with different specialist teacher).
Music
PSHE/Values

Drama not taught as separate subject but part of English.

Ops I forgot science taught as 3 separate subjects and ICT.

Dd1's school teaches 17 subjects in Y7 but is slightly different - ordinary state school but they sort of rotate subjects.

Rotate these every 7/8 weeks: sewing/ wood work/ drama & dance/ cooking (2 hours a week)

Rotate each term: Religious Studies/ History/ Geography - 6 hours a week. Lots of group work, excursions & projects. This school is big on using this 3 hour block 2x a week to also instill study skills and lots of reflection about how to do it better next time.

PSHE - taught in assemblies & as part of form

PE - 1 hour a week
Art - 1 hour a week
Music - 1 hour a week

Science (combined physics/ chemistry/ biology) taught as 2 simultaneous units running 2 days a week with one teacher and 1 day a week with the other.

Maths (3 hours a week)
English (3 hours a week)

MFL 3 hours a week
ICT (Computing) 1 hour a week

The school has academic departments/ groups - and I get the impression the teachers are specialised & usually pretty experienced in these subject areas.

I don't know but suspect the rotation thing is about using limited staff in some subject areas more effectively.

I was at a talk at DD's school last night where management claimed that only in France did DC have so many (about 10) specialist teachers in Year 7. I quite vociferously pointed out that English DC had many more but thought I run a quick MN check.

I was wondering what purpose your question had? You may find, of course, that some of our schools have few specialist maths or science teachers! Big recruitment problems in some areas. Does France have the same issues?

Yes, lots of teacher shortages in France, especially in Maths, Technology and English.

Is it because the schools have different ages? One of the reasons why year 7s get so many specialists is because they are in 11-18 schools, and teachers who are recruited to mainly teach 14-18 will still have some classes lower down the school.Whilst I am sure that middle schools which teach the 9-13 age range will have some specialists, I would expect there to be fewer.

French schools only use specialist teachers from 11-18. The range of subjects is a bit different to England: History & Geography is one subject in France, as is Physics & Chemistry and Life & Earth Sciences (Biology & Geology) so fewer teachers.
