EPQ in DT?

DS has just done his AS levels and thinks he will need to do a resit or two. He also wants to do an EPQ in DT as he really enjoyed it at GCSE and its something he's interested in.

However it has no relevance at all to the degree subject he wants to do. Can you even do one in DT? Would PE be any better? Again not relevant to his degree subject! Any advice gratefully received.

You can do EPQ in anything. However it's supposed to stretch kids in one of their current subjects - is he doing DT or PE now? On target for a good grade? Tbh though if he's having to resit some he'd be far better off concentrating on that than adding in something that's difficult and time consuming.

An EPQ can stretch a student in one of their current subjects, but it doesn't have to. My DS's school also suggest that it's an opportunity to pursue an interest in a subject that you haven't been able to do at A level but might have liked to - as in your DS's case. And it doesn't have to be 'in' a subject - as titchy says, you can do it in anything. It can combine a number of interests. I heard of a boy who researched ancient Roman food and habits and cooked a whole Roman banquet.

However, I would query the timing. Usually the bulk of work for an EPQ would be done in Y12, with many schools aiming to have it finished by October half-term of Y13. When you say your DS is going to do resits, will be be repeating Y12 or doing the resits alongside A2s? If the latter, that is quite a workload and to do an EPq on top might be too much.

Resits, if needed which is quite likely, will be done along side A2. He's not doing DT or PE but would have liked to and misses them.

At my DS' school whilst they've had some study skills sessions, the bulk of the work kicks off now that they've finished their AS exams and throughout the summer with presentations in early September/October of year 13. It can be done on the basis of a design or even a performance, I believe. Personally I'd want to know how much support he's likely to get in the last few weeks of term as he's more or less on his own for much of the study period.
