Hi,
ds currently Year 8 in a prep school. Beginning to look like he may need to go back into state school from September (so into Year 9)
Do I complete an 'in year admission' form for our LA ( bit confused as its into year 9 and we're not moving area/house etc) and when would I need to do this by?

Visit the secondary school that you like and apply to go on their waiting list. If a place at a good state school comes up then you will have take it up. It may well mean that you don't complete the year at the prep school. Places at good state secondaries rarely come up or stay available for long. In someways you are lucky having time on your side and hopefully will avoid a place at the shitty sink school no one wants their kid to go.

Oh, and when your child arrives at the state school, they will soon find out that they are not the only one moving sectors.
Its far more common than MN would have you think Smile
The state school will help you with the forms - they have no axe to grind.

do I get the forms from the county council or the school?

go to the school
the office staff will be straight with you
if you need a link, they will provide it
but having spoken to them face to face, you become real

round here the swop is really, really common : dozens of pupils per LEA per year
they are geared up for it

Form and info about where to apply to is normally online. Were you hoping to let him finish his prep ? You are expected to take up the place as and when though, you can't usually apply now, get a place and wait for September unless they have a year 9 intake ( like Çranbrook) Do you really have no other private options left now , is the head of prep not being helpful?

AtiaoftheJulii · 20/03/2015 21:33

All the information should be on your council website, as the process differs from LA to LA. E.g. in ours you can only apply to schools half a term before you want to start.

I was hoping he could finish, though prepared to not if necessary. Waiting on a couple of private options, due to lateness of applications very much depends on what they can offer as bursaries.
Feel quite let down by head, doesn't seem to have a voice with other schools, thought would be on phone etc but apparently not his job?
