Yr 11 - Maths Intervention, week off timetable - good idea?

I've received a letter today informing me that the Maths dept informing me that DS has the potential to achieve at least a Grade C (Higher Paper) but to ensure this he is being offered intervention for 5 mornings - total of 4 hrs per day. Obviously this means he misses other lessons.

I am a bit concerned if this is wise given how close we are to the GCSE exams starting. On the one hand I think yes, Maths is important, but so are his other exams!

Any advice much appreciated! TIA.

If he doesn't get his C then he will have to resit in sixth form/college, taking time and attention away from his other subjects then. Not getting a C now will be a complete nightmare later on so missing a week of lessons could well be worth it.

I'm not sure that missing one week would cause him to drop a grade in another subject, are there any that he is particularly concerned about missing? Could he then attend catch-up classes/revision sessions in those subjects?

Interestingly I was just thinking yesterday that if DD1 were offered that kind of English intervention I'd grab it with both hands.

Things to consider:

  • have CAs been completed in other subjects (DD still has MFL ones to complete)
  • has syllabus been completed in other subjects (DD just finished, I think)
  • is there any group work, e.g. Drama
  • would he 'engage' with this level of intensity

Additionally, if he fails maths he'll have to retake it next year.
On the other hand if he fails maths he'll get the opportunity to retake next year, which he won't get with other GCSEs apart from English.

I fit is just one week go for it but do check it will not affect other subjects. It will better to get the C now rather than add into the mix in Y12 but at the same time he also needs o get the total grades necessary to do what he wants next year.

As TeenAndTween says check the CA. All very well attending maths intervention and then you miss a CA
