I know they have to retake,
but
can the CAs be carried forward and 'reused' or do they have to be retaken, or what?

Someone must know?
(shameless bump)

If they fail the CA can be used in the autumn retake but I am not sure about the summer retakes.

Has your DS/DD failed or are you anticipating a fail in the summer

TeenAndTween · 04/03/2015 21:16

Due to take this summer.
(Hoping for the best but pondering the worst.)

If you are worried I would check now.

My DS failed last summer but because he failed the CA (why a CA of grade D was put in when he was taking the higher paper is a whole other story!!) he hasn't been able to retake and is doing functional skills. If he passes that then next year he can do GCSE.

Good luck for for all the exams!

English isn't my subject but have worked in Colleges specialising in re-takes.
Yes you can carry any controlled assessments / coursework / ISAs (depending on subject) forward and just retake the exams as needed.
Most sixth form colleges / FE colleges should be able to manage the retake process and deal with the exam boards.

Thanks. (Hopefully won't be needed, but nice to know).

my son did the Foundation Eng Lang last year (his CAs were moderated at a C but graded down to a D). He got a D overall (missed a C grade by 3 marks).
He resat in the November at a different school with the original CAs submitted but I don't think they were marked again. This time he was entered for the higher exam and passed (a few marks off a B grade).
So, yes, the summer exam ones can definitely be re-submitted, even for a different level paper and at a different school in our case.
Sorry, sounds a bit garbled.

TeenAndTween · 05/03/2015 13:32

Thanks. It would definitely be a different school as everywhere is 6th form colleges round here, so nice to know.

My DD got a D in GCSE foundation Eng Lang (thanks to the Gove fiasco in 2012). At College last year she re-sat the whole exam in the summer after a year of lessons. The CA questions seemed to be a lot easier and she passed with a top mark on a C. So there is always the possibility that the CA questions may be more agreeable on the re-sit too.

jeanne16 · 05/03/2015 17:57

You may be able to reuse the CA but I would first ask the school to tell you the marks. If they are not good, he really should redo them as higher marks in the CA would help him to archieve a C overall.

Jeanne DD has (very) good CAs, but is currently struggling with the Exam paper. I'm hopeful that between now and exams the school will be able to get through to her how to do the exam questions (she has some specific learning difficulties that seem to be blocking her); I'm probably worrying over nothing (I hope).
