The Priory is the best comprehensive in the Shrewsbury area. The private schools are Shrewsbury High for girls and Shrewsbury School for boys ( from 13).There's a very good grammar school Adams Grammar in Newport ( mixed).Another highly academic mixed private school - Concord College ( again from 13).There are other Comprehensives that you may be able to apply for.Much Wenlock is good for sports and Drama and Church Stretton .

Thomas Adams in Wem (about 20 min north of Shrewsbury) is supposed to be good.

Also a friend of mine has a son at The Corbet School in Baschurch and they love it.
