I just thought I'd get us started up again!

DD's friend has also firmed Durham and insured York - he is doing a science subject.

Waitingaround · 29/03/2015 13:12

Hellsbells- so's my Ds Smile

NiceCardigan · 29/03/2015 13:32

We are about 4 hours from Durham so still reasonably far away. DS is unconcerned and planning to be too busy to come home in term time (and probably too busy to communicate with home as well)

Littleham · 29/03/2015 13:36

4.5 hours - 5 hours to York. No family up there that we can contact in an emergency.

circular · 29/03/2015 14:41

Looking like 2.5 to 3 hours round trip here, for any of DDs likely choices.
Knows her firm, but not 100% on her insurance yet.
Does plan to come home every few weekends - we shall see. Guessing it can be restrictive if they work part time in Uni town. Although not sure whether she will have the time for regular work on her course.
The change in her this year has been phenominal, this time last year thought she wouldn't tear herself away at all. Now seems more than ready.

Are others DC planning to get p/t jobs in term time? Or perhaps try and transfer existing jobs if with large companies?

Waitingaround · 29/03/2015 15:11

My Ds has no intention of coming back during term time either nice cardigan which considering the distance is just as well- we also have no family anywhere near littleham however I live near your D's firm horsemad so perhaps we should consider an emergency mumsnet support system? Smile

circular Ds is planning on having a part time job during term time- he will probably transfer his current contract to his uni town (already been agreed- if he wants).

Waitingaround I know some of the larger retailers do such transfers, must get DD to check Re hers. They have branches in all 3 of her choices. Not sure she would want to commit to the Sunday shift in term time though, and will need to know her timetable before committing to weekdays.
Strangly, never asked at any if the Unis / Conservatoires whether part time work frowned upon for music students.

Mumslife can see a few London meet ups too. though her closest choice is the most expensive on train fares.

hellsbells99 · 29/03/2015 17:40

DD's favourite is only an hour away with her insurance a couple of hours away. She will probably come home when her friends arrange a big meet up otherwise I am planning to go and meet her occasionally for a meal or shopping. She has been advised that there won't be much time for paid work on her course and she will also be expected to do some placement work on Saturdays, so she will mainly be restricted to working in the holidays (but again advised to look for voluntary placement work).

mumahead · 29/03/2015 19:49

we are 2 and a half hours away fro either uni. Weekend still do-able. Still Ds would like closer just those were the unis he liked.

Fingers crossed for grades!

hellsbells99 · 29/03/2015 20:03

DD is worried her firm is a bit close to home! But it was her favourite. Her maths teacher has told her that it is not too close and she should choose the one she prefers.

NiceCardigan · 29/03/2015 20:03

I expect if DS needs some extra money he can work in the college bar or the toastie bar (and shred his knuckles grating cheese like I used to!). DD2 works in the uni bar and it works well because she can choose her shifts each week.

Leeds2 · 29/03/2015 20:17

Are jobs in uni bars, cafes etc easy to come by, or are there lots and lots of applicants?

NiceCardigan · 29/03/2015 20:22

At DD2's uni you applied in the summer and everyone who applied was trained and had to work shifts in freshers week. That got rid of lots of people! Then the ones that had done ok we're kept on. The bar is open in the daytime for coffees so DD2 can do a shift then rather than always working in the evening.

DD1 was a repeat paid volunteer for Psychology experiments and made some money doing that.

NiceCardigan · 29/03/2015 20:38

DD2 didn't start working on the bar till 2nd year but there were 1st years working. Training was the Thurs and Fri immediately before the arrival weekend so they just got their rooms couple of days early.

DD1 worked a couple of open days as well.

Leeds2 · 29/03/2015 21:26

What did DD have to do to be part of a Psychology experiment, NiceCardigan? That sounds quite interesting!

Also sounds like there are lots of opportunities for work, which is good to hear.

NiceCardigan · 29/03/2015 21:33

She just saw a poster in the students union about it and once she'd done one she was on an email list that asked for participants for upcoming experiments.

Horsemad · 29/03/2015 21:54

I'm 3 hrs from Durham and 2 from York but will happily trek up the A1 to help your DCs if needed!
I'm only an hour from Nott'm so can also turn out there Grin

Littleham · 29/03/2015 22:15

That is so lovely Horsemad Smile

Same goes for anyone with a dc at Bristol or Bath. Happy to help as I am very close to those two universities.

Leeds2 · 29/03/2015 22:30

That is lovely, Horsemad and Littleham. I would really appreciate that in a crisis.

Waitingaround · 30/03/2015 07:56

I'm 30 mins from Southampton and know the uni area well- so happy to help anyone's Dc's too Smile
