Maths Book Recommendation Needed

My Dd is in year 7 in the top maths group. She just missed out on a level 6 in her sats.

She is really struggling with the work as the teacher is not explaining properly what to do. My Dd also struggles to understand what she is saying.

Can anyone recommend a book to help her with algebra etc.

I have tried to speak to the teacher but I also struggled to understand her. She has a very strong accent and speaks very quickly.

Does the school have a login for the mymaths website? That has interactive lessons and tests for the whole maths curriculum and would be the first thing I would point parents to.

My daughters also in year 7 and was recommended the CGP books
www.cgpbooks.co.uk/Parent/books_ks3_maths - there is foundation level and higher level - my daughters also in the top set and was told the higher level was the one she needed.

They explain things simply with good working examples and test questions . I have also found some really good tutorials on you tube when she has been stuck or unsure of something.

I would recommend Singapore math books such as step by step problem solving grade 6 or 5; 70 must know word problem; Singapore mathe challenge grade 5+. There are varied levels of practice problems, a strategies overview and an answer key. Strategies and thinking skills presented in clear step by step explanations.

I have been using MyMaths to teach myself maths so I can support DD. It is an excellent resource. You can both log in under the school's log in on different computers. DD is currently revising for her mock GCSE in maths using MyMaths.

Just a parent - but have run into similar and found a few solutions out there:

Khan Academy (free website) - you can just watch videos which explain concepts or you can join (and do practise problems and get points): www.khanacademy.org/ - either type in the topic (percentages) in the search window and read the video summaries to select the one appropriate to you - or work through sections (select SUBJECTS/ Maths/ ...).

BBC Bitesize KS3: www.bbc.co.uk/education/subjects/zqhs34j - this is less whizz bang - more reading slides - but again explains concepts clearly. - just go through subject areas. There are also games for practise.

DD1's maths teacher and science teacher have put her on to this game which revises general concepts for KS3: www.millionaireforschools.co.uk/quizzes/751-General-Revision-Maths-KS3

I stumbled across this 5 a day maths quiz to help revise for GCSEs - right now DD1 (Y7) is working at Numeracy level - but trying some foundation stuff. corbettmaths.com/5-a-day/

Also see what on-line resources the school belongs to...for example, our school subscribes to My Maths - and there are a lot of games and you can go to maths lessons to revise or review concepts you're finding tricky. Just use Library and then see what level most of the homeworks are in - and select that level and look through what there is.
