Science GCSE - can anyone help with a query please?

Ds is in Year 10 and is to take triple science which will result in 2 GCSE's. Bearing in mind that half a term has gone already does anyone know how many hours of lessons/homework time would be required for this? Thanks

My year 10 doing triple science has 14 hours of science a fortnight. No idea on homework as she deals with that herself. And triple will mean GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry & Physics as separate subjects. 2 GCSEs would be double science ?

Triple will result in 3 GCSE grades. At dc school the same amount of lesson time is allocated for either double or triple but the decision as to which is taken is only made towards end of year10.

That's doesn't sound like triple science.

That's double award science. Core and additional. In my school year 10 and 11 have 10 hours a fortnight for double science. I hope that helps.

That's double science, it's just that it is made up of all the three subjects.

It's usually about 5-6 hour a week teaching and 1-3h a week homework depending on how difficult the particular student finds it. All approximate, some schools do more, some do less.

With triple science, you end up with a GCSE in Physics, a GCSE in Chemistry and a GCSE in Biology.

That's not likely to be enough alone but if the child and parent are motivated then they can find a way, for example like this.

just checked with DD2 who is also in year 10 doing triple science - they do 2 of the 3 subjects at a time on a rotating arrangement. So this term is 2 hours a week each of chemistry and physics, with an hour each for homework

She said 4 hours a week feels like barely enough

2 GCSEs i.e. Core and Additional Science is Double Award Science OP.
At dds school they have 10 hours a fortnight for Double Science and 15 hours a fortnight for Triple teaching time.
Homework is approx half an hour per option per week.
So Double Science approx 1 hour a week.
Triple Science approx half an hour on Chem, Biology and Physics per week.

What else is on her timetable that she is only getting 3 science a week
but yes the no homework sounds incredibly unlikely

Can I ask how many hours of lessons per week is the norm for Maths and English GCSE's please.
Ds is in a specialist school which was selected because of their assurances that they could cater for GCSE's. I am now worried that they may not be providing enough lesson hours to enable the pupils to actually pass the exams.

Three hours a week each.

5 lessons/fortnight per subject, so 9-10/fnight for English (a double subject), 5 for math, 9-10 for double science, etc.

Homework is assigned but DS doesn't do it, so can't comment there. Whether 6/fnight is enough kind of depends what else they are doing with the time.

specialist in what way ? 40 min lessons aren't really long enough to do a practical. ds had a double and single for each subject iirc.

I haven't got the year 10/11 timetable on me but they are only able to do double science they get some homework, not a huge amount.

At dds school during Years 10 & 11 the vocationals are mostly done during twilight hours (4-6) rather than during the school day, unlike years 7-9

Dds school is specialist in a particular aptitude though , not for SEN. (Though dd does have an ASD. )
