Norfolk Independent Senior Schools

Hi All. I couldn't find a recent thread on this topic so thought I'd start a new one.

My DCs are due to start at Taverham Hall next September. The ethos and values of the Head seem to be spot on right for us. The green space they have is amazing.

It's a long way off yet, but I'm wondering about our Senior School choices.

I don't like the idea of Gresham's as I don't want DCs to have to do the long hours and Saturday school.

The city schools, Norwich High and Norwich School would be options. Also Langley for the sake of a 'country' option.

I've heard some very rude local gossip about Langley being for the "rich but thick". I don't believe this could possibly be true - could it? Either way, we're after a school our children will enjoy spending time at, not the school promising to get the best 'results' out of them.

I've also heard gossip about Norwich High only interested in girls fitting a certain mould, willing to tow the line. But also of bitchiness and bullying not dealt with appropriately.

Norwich School looks very good. But I'm concerned the physical openness of the school gives way to the children getting away with all sorts in private. Is this completely unfounded?

Does anyone have any true stories, good or bad about any of these schools?

I have only ever heard excellent things about Norwich School

The ethos and characteristics of any school can change over the years. You are projecting quite a few years ahead and changes of leadership can lead to dramatic changes. My DD boarded at a school where lots of people would consider it for the rich and not so bright, but under the current Head, great emphasis has been placed on academic achievement. The results are now impressive. You can always check the league tables for independent schools to see where these schools are academically. However, you have to remember that some parents do have children who are not academically bright but do want an independent school. Not all independent schools are stuffed full of clever children.

Also, bullying and bitchiness is a feature in plenty of independent schools. You have to instill coping strategies and ensure that the school addresses the problems. Lots of schools do not because they need the fees and other income from these parents. It is a business unfortunately. I do not believe layout of buildings make any difference to the ethos and culture of a school. It is the quality of leadership that makes the difference. What you do not like about these schools right now can easily change. People might even address their parenting skills to produce pleasant children.....you never know!

Norwich School has been/ is fantastic for my children. They do have assemblies on what to do if a tourist stops you to take a photograph though! !
