Switching from GCSE to BTEC after a term?

Ds's class have been told by a subject teacher that he doesn't know whether they'll be up to achieving GCSE levels or not. They are to work on the GCSE until Christmas when it will be decided whether to switch to a BTEC instead.

Does that mean that a whole term would have been wasted and can a BTEC be completed when a term has been missed? Any advice would be helpful as this is worrying me a bit. Thanks

I've been told BTEC's are... not easier, but more manageable? If the teacher really thinks the kids are not up to GCSE's then the sooner they switch to BTEC the better.

Would that mean more practical and less theory ? Maybe the group aren't all Grade 4/5 instrumentalists ?

Their performance has obviously not been assessed rigorously enough before the class started the GCSE. If they are "not up to it" in October, they probably were not good enough last July either! So why did the school let them start the GCSE? I would ask if the exams have certain similarities so hopefully a change is not going to waste the work done this term.

For music, it's not a bad option - the BTEC is more practical, more vocational and doesn't involve composition. It's not necessary for students to be grade 5 standard and at least one of the unit assesses progress in playing rather than simply looking at how good a musician the candidate is. If you were talking Science, I'd be concerned, but not for music.

Oh, and fine to do it now - we do it as an extra-curricular where I teach so they get an hour a week, which is ample as long as they keep up to date with paperwork.

My Dd2 did this for PE because she wasnt keeping up with the written work in GCSE she got 2 distinction *'s in the end so was happy but at the time she was upset to be moved out of her group.

She has gone on to do Level 3 Btec instead of A levels and has done really well
