Year 8 levels

Can anybody point me in the direction of finding out how teacher's now are assessing levels please?

Last year in year 7 ds's work was given levels 4, 5 and 6 depending on how he was getting on with a subject. Now he mentions level 3 (says it's not very good) I have no idea - I heard GCSEs are now levels 1 to 9 so if he's only in year 8 and level 3 for a subject I suppose that may mean he's working at average level.

You definitely need to find out whether they are using (old) NC levels or new GCSE grading or something else.

A 3 for the new GCSE is only 2 up from the bottom, as remember that 9 will be the top grade (to allow for a 10 or 11 later if needed).

I would be surprised if they are already using new GCSE grades in year 8.

My DD's school have just changed over to their new system and we have been told that it is based on the new GCSE grades 1 - 9. She is in year 8, top set for everything, and her end of year 9 targets are all 7's and 8's.

I doubt ds's school are using grades 1 to 9 as he is working at just above average level in most subjects according to his report end of last academic year so average would be 4 and below average a 3; mostly he's top of the average groups.

hesterton thanks, I will contact school, they haven't explained what they are doing. An old NC level 3 would be below that expected at end of primary.

My dd has tried to explain the new levels her school are now using, but doesn't know much.
Would be nice if the schools gave us some information on new levels, but I've not had anything as yet.

You need to ask the school. I asked DD1's form tutor when she had an academic tutoring appointment. She said there was no way they could cope with introducing a full new system across all year groups, in all subjects, all at once, as their entire reporting and marking system is based on them. They will continue using the old levels for the time being, but individual subjects will gradually phase them out.
