Time off school to visit another school

Ds is in Y9. I want to take him to visit another school, with a view to possibly sitting its entrance exam for Y10. How should I word the request for leave of absence?

It's going to be tricky, if you don't want them to know your ds is thinking of leaving!

Otherwise, just be matter of fact - Leave of absence requested for school visit, as ds is considering sitting the entrance exam.

I may have to do this for my DD and sixth form. However I would just tell them factually, they can't refuse neither can they get rid of a student for this reason. Teachers can ask for work to be made up, for the lost time.

Be careful: have seen children treated differently and not in a good way once the school finds out they are considering a move. I'd cover it as sickness absence to avoid the risk.

By the teachers? Shock

Surely that would be highly unprofessional, and would merit a strongly worded letter of complaint to the School Governors?

I did this (different circumstances) with my son in year 8. I told the school and it didn't go down as an absence, just an off-site with permission so didn't go against his attendance.

Ds isn't thinking of leaving. I'm just not sure that, lovely as his current school is, it is the right place for him.

I would have liked the chance to discuss his situation with his HoY first, but the timings are such that I'll have to request the LoA before I get to chat with the HoY.

I would just be honest. If you want leave I guess you nay not care what they think!

I just want to explore possibilities, really.

I took my daughter out of school to have a look around an Independent school and made an excuse because I knew that I would need to take her out again to sit the exams if she liked the school. When I took her out for the exams I was honest and stated that she was sitting entrance exams because at this point I knew that she would probably be leaving ............
