Peebles high school

Hi. My family is considering a move to the Scottish Borders. My husband knows the area and has suggested Peebles. (He likes the town and he would need to drive into Edinburgh daily.) I wondered if anyone has recent experience or knowledge of Peebles high school? Also, what is it like to live in the town, or in nearby Cardrona? We have two children, currently primary school age. Thank you.

A Friend retired to Peebles from Hertfordshire because her son lived there. As a retired teacher, she has much experience of secondary schools and speaks very highly of Peebles High school. Her grandson is studying Vet. medicine at Edinburgh Uni and her grandaughter is studying Psychology at Glasgow Uni. Both are at their first choice Unis. Sounds good!

That's great to hear, thank you.

I live in Peebles and have done all my life.

I attended Peebles high school and it's been 9 years since I left.

It's good, very exam result focused and the teachers are great too. A lot of them are still there from when I was at school.

Any questions I'll be happy to answer about the school and the town Smile

Lovely to hear from someone in Peebles! My father-in-law lives in Jedburgh, so I'm familiar with the Borders, although not Peebles itself. We currently live in the south east of England and my husband works in London, so we're looking to move to somewhere quieter!

As a family we like the outdoors and walking in the countryside, so I'm guessing there would be plenty of lovely areas for that around Peebles. Also, we swim regularly and are members at our local gym, and my husband said Peebles would offer good facilities.

It's reassuring to know that teachers stay at the high school, probably a good sign. Does it offer lots of extra activities - sports, music etc? And the overall behaviour of pupils at the school?
My husband was in the Borders last week and said Peebles had a nice town centre with a good selection of shops. Would you agree with that?

Thanks so much for offering advice.

It's no problem at all, I'm happy to answer your questions.

Peebles is surrounded by stunning scenery and walks, it's absolutely beautiful at this time of year and there is loads to do. It's home to some of the seven stanes mountain biking tracks so popular with bikers too.

Every area of the town is nice, some nice than others too but they have built a new development at 'kingsmeadow' just as you come into the South side of Peebles with lovely family homes and surrounded by hills and woodlands. It's a 3 mile walk from kailize gardens, with a lovely bistro, equestrian centre and fishery.

As for swimming and gym facilities, Peebles has a large public pool and leisure centre with membership options available. Most of the local hotels (Peebles hydro, mercure Barony castle, Macdonald Cardrona) have leisure memberships available too for all the family. Each hotel is great with lovely facilities.

There are a wide range of after school activities at Peebles high school, there is something for everyone and they have a huge rugby team and hockey team.

Peebles (like the other Borders towns) is rugby focused, with rugby teams from primary upwards and there is a big sport community in the town.

From what I have seen, the high school kids are polite, considerate and friendly. They swamp the high street at lucbhtine and they are all well behaved and polite.

Peebles is fantastic for shops, every shop on the high street is an independent business and they thrive due to their good service and unique gifts and stock. There are several good restaurants in the town and friendly pubs too. There are no nightclubs.

The parks are good, people friendly, good schools and a good community spirit throughout. It's an amazing place to bring up dcs and not too far from Edinburgh so trips to the city are easy.

Anything else I'll answer, hope this was helpful Smile

Wow, thank you so much for all the detail in your reply, really helpful. It all sounds great, just what I was hoping to hear. My husband had lots of positive things to report back on Peebles, following his recent visit, and it's nice to hear it confirmed by someone from the area. No problem about the lack of a nightclub, I'm far too old for that and won't be sorry if there isn't a local one when my kids are teenagers! Many thanks once again.
