Does anybody know anything about Military schools?

Ds has shown an interest in the Duke of York royal military school in Dover. Does anybody have any views on this school? He loved the pomp and ceremony about the place and the atmosphere.

Also, we are not in the military and have no connection to it. I can see it says on the website that they accept people who don't have parents in the military but are there many children there like this? Do these schools overly promote the military as a career option or do they provide a broad range of career options and advice?

Any views very welcome as we are completely in the dark.

I think although the education is free you still need to pay boarding fees which could be over £10k per year?

Yes it is still about 10k per year to board.

I'm more concerned that he would be the only one there with no connection to the military and whether it makes a big difference?

We have friends whose children have gone throughout DoY and there were mixed opinions. All were pad brats, so the military aspect was familiar - some loved it, some were less enthusiastic. They only opened admissions to non-military in the last few years and there was quite a splash made over the first non-military child to attend. The military aspect is very strong - all children are in the DVD, there are regular parades and military-style events, the pastoral care is very much geared towards supporting military families and the unique circumstances thrown up by having a serving parent or parents. So long as the military ethos is something you like, I can't see why a non-military child shouldn't' thrive there.

As far as I know, non-military are the lowest priority for admission, however, so depends on how many military families are chasing a place.
