Hand holding thread for parents of DC who are not expecting all A and A*s GCSE results.

I'm starting to feel a nervous now about results day. My DS is predicted C's and B's in most of his GCSEs except French which despite working hard for he is predicted a D and ICT which was all coursework and looks like an A.
Good luck to everyone.

DS worked so hard for his exams. He's SEN and we have been told all along that he would get nothing. I just hope and pray that he gets c in Maths and English so he can do the course he wants at college. Other than that, the fact that he sat them at all is good enough for us.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 20/08/2014 21:31

DS1 has gone from being quietly confident (despite us worrying that he wasn't revising as much as he should) to quietly panicking. Last minute nerves I think... DS2 did an early GCSE so I shall be dropping them both off tomorrow and we'll either be going out for a meal in celebration or commiseration. TBH, as long as he can can do his A'Level choices he'll be okay. If he doesn't do as well as he originally thought then it'll be a wake up call for his level of work for sixth form.

Just to say I am really hurt by this thread when there is already a lively hand holding thread running. My child has all A*/A predictions and I can assure you all that I am feeling just as anxious about tomorrow as I would if she was hoping to make a C in everything. Life as high achieving student is not a bowl of ice cream and sprinkles and it really, really pisses me off to have a distinction drawn in this way. We are all parents. We all share the same anxiety for our dc. There should be no need for this thread and I repeat, I am hurt by it.
Good luck to everybody's children tomorrow. I hope they all get what they want - whatever that is.

IDismyname · 20/08/2014 22:26

mrsmaturin Hmm

ChillySundays · 20/08/2014 22:56

mrsmaturin - we might all be mothers but I have also been the mother of a child who was predicted all A/A*'s. As worrying as the wait was I knew that even if she dropped a grade or two (actually achieved mostly Bs and Cs) she would still be able to do what she wanted at college. The difference with this thread is that our DCs are predicted lower grades to start with. In my DS's case drop a grade means Ds and he can't do the course at all. There's a big difference
So I am glad this thread exists.

Maybe I am grumpy because unlike others on this thread I can't have a drink as I am out in a minute to pick DD up

mrsmaturin · 20/08/2014 23:03

Well I know I am grumpy because I've spent the last two years being told I have 'nothing to worry about' whilst trying to keep my kid together and help her learn to cope with the pressure she's putting on herself. Tomorrow will materially affect her future and how she feels about herself, just like it will for all the dc taking these wretched exams. What was wrong with the thread already running in this section?

halfthewaytothemoon · 20/08/2014 23:13

two glasses of wine works well ! not even my results but you know what they say .. every little helps!

ChillySundays · 20/08/2014 23:17

Mrsmaturin - I was you a couple of years ago and like I said I feel a lot different this time round.
Maybe Chicken felt that the other thread wasn't going to help in the way she wanted it to and I get that.

turdfairynomore · 21/08/2014 02:50

I'm a poor sleeper at the best of times but I am wide awake and pacing the floor tonight so forgive the ramblings! The poor dog is exhausted but is duty bound to stay awake with me-or so she thinks!! DS16 gets his results today. He is not an academic high flyer -unlike DD19 who got all A* at gcse and A level. We are in NI and his year was the last to get a/b/c/d grading in 11+. He got a D but is at a grammar (if you know NI you could guess which one if I say he's meant to be the "cream" of society (rich & thick-he is neither!!) In the past 5 years he has grown in so many ways and has made the most amazing progress. He has started to see himself as an achiever-not that he's expecting As, but he hopes to at least pass everything. I'm so terrified that he will get lower grades than he expected and deserves (maths is my huge fear but it could be any/all of them!) and that he'll lose the self esteem that has been so hard won. I also really want him to get back into 6th form as he loves school (as much as any 16 year old can!), the pastoral care has been outstanding -this has been a very traumatic year in our family and the school has been amazing; he has had fabulous opportunities in sport, and he's got a great bunch of friends. I'm at the stage of bargaining my soul away-and of trying reason with "whoever" that he's "owed" passes since this has been such a difficult year and he's been so amazing in how he's handled it!! Rant over! I'm going to lie on sofa-at least the dog will be able to slept!!!

sausagedog12 · 21/08/2014 05:04

It's here Best of luck to all children today expecting high or lower grades, Remember it's not the end of the world and there are different routes to happiness.

Chottie · 21/08/2014 05:25

GCSE results are in the past for me, but I can remember the tension of waiting very clearly. If things don't work out today, it's not the end of the world. Both my DCs went down twisting paths of life as opposed to the 'onwards and upwards' paths of some friends' DCs. But fast forward 10/15 years and both my DC are well, happy and doing jobs they love.

Dunlurking · 21/08/2014 06:17

Wishing your dcs the best of luck everyone.

turdfairynomore I cried reading your post. I so hope he gets what he needs. Thinking of you. I'm an early bird so am clutching my cup of tea with our dog keeping me company, like yours. Off to school for ds's results in 2 hours.

turdfairynomore · 21/08/2014 06:36

Dunlurking fingers crossed that today goes smoothly for our human babies so that our fur babies can get a good sleep and a lie in!!

RobotLover68 · 21/08/2014 07:12

My DD is getting her results today - I had a heart sink when I saw the news this morning about the GCSE English - I just want her to pass but if I'm honest it's been 12 years of hard slog for her. She tries so hard but she just can't retain information. Starting feel a bit sick to off to gym to try and calm down.

mrsmaturin sorry you feel that way but I am also a parent of an A* student and wouldn't feel comfortable posting about my DD on the other thread - I hope your child gets the grades they want

ChillySundays · 21/08/2014 08:57

Have just snapped at DH - turn that bloody tv off. If I hear the word 'volatile' one more time. Nausea is getting worse and I am almost crying. Keeping my fingers crossed for you all and double crossed for those who have also had a difficult time to deal with as well.
One hour to go!

thebluehen · 21/08/2014 09:13

I have an A*/A student in my house and also a B student.

There is a difference because I know the bright one will be able to take her A levels of choice if she "flunks" and "only" gets B's.

The other child could have their choices limited if they "flunk " and get C's or D's.

Sitting in the car waiting for ds to appear from school with his results. Hearts racing ten to the dozen. I hope he does well.

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 21/08/2014 10:08

Well my birthday boy has got 3Cs, 4Bs and 4As ( in his A level choices). I am so proud of him. Good luck to everyone.

CaptChaos · 21/08/2014 10:12

DS got an A* and 6 C's.

We are over the moon for him!

Good luck everyone else.

goinggetstough · 21/08/2014 10:31

captchaos just came on here especially to see if your DS had got his results. Congratulations to him. You must be so proud of him.

Congratulations to all those receiving results today!

CaptChaos · 21/08/2014 10:32

I could actually burst with pride.

He, of course is being terribly blasé about it all.

Thank you for caring Thanks

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 21/08/2014 10:34

Wow, well done CaptJunior.

I actually feel more stressed now, just the shock I think.

happyscouse · 21/08/2014 10:34

My son got 2 bs 6cs I doubt there's a family in the country celebrating a C in English so much (believe me it was a hard slog getting there!)

PenisesAreNotPink · 21/08/2014 10:35

Does anyone know if they send out letters with the results on? Dd is away on holiday and won't be back til next week.

TheAmyrlin · 21/08/2014 10:37
