Wwyd- theatre studies A level concerns about teacher.

Dd got her a level results today. The 6 of them that did theatre studies all got Bs- A for performance and C for written work so an over all B. My concern is that they all got the same for AS level and asked the teacher to focus on helping them with their written work in year 13. Which she did- and marked their essays at A and B consistently since Christmas. But still everyone got a c in the exam. Would you say anything to the school? I don't want the same to happen to next year's candidates- it does took as if something's going wrong aomewhere...

This wil be picked up by the school. The next two weeks will involve an analysis of all results in detail subject by subject/teacher by teacher. I would imagine it is already going on.

So I don't have to do anything? Phew. It will stand out - it's the only non A any of the 6 got....

It certainly will be noticed then. One of the ways of judging success is through residuals. They average the points score for the pupil across the board and compare it to their score in each subject. Then the work out whether pupils made the same/ better or worse in each subject. The teacher's residuals will be negative so they will have to come up with an explanation.

As teachers we are under a lot of scrutiny from management in terms of our classes' performance - if they haven't hit their targets the teacher will have a lot of explaining to do. It may be her teaching, but it may be an issue with this particular exam which will show up in the national picture.

Interesting about the national picture- hasn't thought of that.It's a shame- she is a fantastic teacher of the practical side- all As for that. It's also a shame that the kids didn't take a bit of responsibility for their written work. But dd says that's what they thought they were doing when they asked her to focus on that in year 13.
