Japanese - JLPT and GCSE

Does anyone know how the GCSE equates with the JLPT - I've been told that it is JLPT level 3/4 and just wanted to check that's correct?

The above suggests N3 is a little above gcse, N4 being gcse I guess and N2 a level equivalent.

Thanks Titchy. I saw that before but it doesn't explicitly mention GCSE so I couldn't be 100% sure.

Trying to assess where DD is now with a view to taking the GCSE next summer. Her Skype tutor is great, but only geared up to teach JLPT . DD has just taken level 4 which she may or may not have passed.

Just stumbled upon this thread online and thought I would add some comments for anyone else who stumbles across this.

Absolutely no way is GCSE the same as N3, and A level the same as N2. This is total misinformation. GCSE and A level are comparitively much lower standards - I would really say that GCSE is more like N4 and A level is more like N3 (possibly even lower).

N2 implies business levels of fluency, something which you will get from living in Japan for 1+ years - not something you can get from A level!

A quick search shows that AS level Japanese only requires 350 kanji... in contrast N3 is about 650, and N2 is 1000

Zombie thread but just found it again. In my search about JLPT and A level, updating in case it helps someone in the future.

Thank you Randomjak and Hanami. The info in my original post was given to me by a Japanese tutor who is now long gone. We were lucky and then found a great one and DD got an A at GCSE.

The Japanese Foudation told me that N5 is the equivalent of a C at GCSE and N4 is about A* but stressed you can't do a direct comparison.
