Piano lessons - how much?

Does anyone know what piano lessons (for a beginner) would cost? I've been advised to send DS to them. We are in the South East.

Anything between £12-£20 for 30 minutes. Varies a lot depending on where you are in the SE - London much more expensive than Hastings for example.

How do people go about finding a piano tutor? is it just the yellow pages unless you can get a friend to recommend one?

I think my daughters at 12 GBP ....The school usually recommends

My son has them, the lady comes into school we pay £8.50 for a 20 minute lesson in the midlands.

Friend recommendation would be best. We're in Surrey and dh is a musician. If you pm me where you are in Surrey he might be able to recommend someone.

Musicteachers.co.uk - not sure how much quality control there is though, if any!

We pay £30 for a 45 minute lesson. Ds is 10 and has been with the teacher for 3 years. She's bonkers and very fierce but a truly amazing teacher. His lessons are very intensive - she never wastes a second, and she writes detailed practice notes in a book you keep so that you can help your child make progress at home between lessons.

She's in SE London if you're interested in a recommendation.

£17 for 30 minutes on Croydon/Surrey borders. Recommended by a friend.

£29 for lessons in school or £22 for teacher to travel to ours and give half hour lesson. We looked through the tutor pages and you generally get offered the first lesson free to try them out and see if they and your child get on. The piano teacher at my daughters old school would shout at the kids and hold their fingers down on the keys. But it was convenient and cheap (£12) so most parents just went with it.
Whoever advised you to send your DS to have lessons probably knows a good teacher?

It was his school music teacher who advised me. She says it would help him not just with his music, but generally in his other subjects too.

£14 for half an hour lesson. Drive to teachers house. Berkshire.

We pay £18 for half an hour each week in Berkshire. Great teacher who was recommended by friends.

Take a free taster session with any teacher you try out, make sure they teach theory as well - especially if you think your son may go on to do exams.

I pay £14 for half an hour - am in SW. I asked the piano peri who comes into school (where I teach) She had no spaces but recommended someone. DD has made impressive progress.

£35 per hour and teacher comes to our home. Bloody brilliant too!!

£17.50 for lessons at school or between £17.00 -£20.00 privately. Can highly recommend music both DCs had more fun and friendship through this than anything else.

Do you have a piano or are you planning to get one? Lessons will be pointless unless your DS has access to one for practice. You need to take that into consideration of costs.

You don't need to invest in a piano straightaway. DS is grade 3 piano and used a Yamaha keyboard from Argos throughout, apart from his practise book he has started to learn songs he likes and performed them at school concerts etc. We are only now about buy a proper piano, now that we know he is quite serious about it. Avoid shelling out thousands on a piano, only for your dc to drop it a yr later.

£13 for half an hour in SE London. Teacher is a peripatetic at local schools.

We pay £25 for half an hour - the teacher comes to us after school, arranged through an agency not via the school. She is great. Going rate found here seems to be £25-30 for half an hour.
