DD disappointed with Y9 exam results.

DD's school is quite hot on exams, presumably to get them used to the rigours of GCSEs. Dd seemed to do loads of revision but her results have started coming in and she is bitterly disappointed. She managed 65% and 67% on two maths papers, which I thought was fine as maths has never been her strongest subject and only 55% in Physics which was less than the class average.

I am stuck in hospital so I am not on hand to manage her disappointment. I would hate for her to get disillusioned and give up trying. There seems to be an obsession with getting A grades but not everyone can be an A student. She has two very clever and pushy best friends which no doubt makes her feel worse.

My poor lamb.

It depends - they could cover part of the English syllabus in yr 9, most schools do do this. I would find it unlikely if they marked it with the GCSE markscheme though, if these are whole cohort exams that represent their end-of-term grade and are going to be reported to parents - too much risk of crash-and-burn!

I felt a bit worried reading your post - as I have many years of teaching academic anxious girls - that she's getting so worried about these exams that don't mean anything at all. I hope she's got over the disappointment and is now celebrating her achievement - and by that I mean not her grades but more that she's a year 9 student who's worked so steadily! That's a truly great achievement.

Yes thanks. She felt much better when she'd git all her results in

It wasn't helped by her supposed best friend who has always been Miss Popularity saying about dd's physics exam. "Oh what a shame. You work so hard but it just doesn't pay off"

I told dd she should have given her a good slap. With friends like that .........

She is in Year 9, only in Year 9!! Are you kidding me? Those grades don't count yet and you are already thinking of Year 11!! I'd be more concerned with her mental and physical health at that age. Are you actually aware how many young kinds are anorexic and self harming? Get her to relax and once, and so should you!

Whoa. They have end of year exams. She revised hard. Did not do as well as she hoped and expressed disappointment. Where have I mentioned Y11? But they have recently had to choose options so it is hardly unusual.

We are relaxed thank you.
