Are the GCSE exams at the same sort of time every year?

I am starting a Science GCSE in September but have been asked to go on a holiday of a life time around the time the exams would be due.

Do you know if the exam is always at a similar time or could it be anywhere from the end of may until the end of June?

Thanks.

They are always at very similar times/within a few days of each other. For instance AQA Physics modules 1+2 were on the 23rd May last year and the 19th this year. Can booking the holiday wait until the exam board has released their timetable? What board are you sitting with? Here is AQA's provisional timetable for next year, with Physics being on the 20th May, therefore following the pattern again.

We are looking at booking in January so quite a way off yet. Do you know when the exam timetable is released?

I'm doing double science with AQA I think.

AQA have released their provisional timetable for then, it may well change but it'll give you a bit of an idea.

Oh well the exam timetable will definitely have been released by then, for now though you will just have to go off previous dates for a rough guide.

sinningsaint's provisional timetable link above gives the possible dates of the modules if you look at it.

I disagree - my subject was moved to over 2 weeks later this year, having been roughly the same date for several years. We advise students to book nothing in ' the exam period' , ie start may till end June.

This year AQA sciences unit 2 and 3s were in May. Unit 1s are in June - totally odd!

sinningsaint · 31/05/2014 21:43

hellsbells99 it is like that every year as unit 1's are generally sat in Y10 (unless taking triple science in which case it will usually be one), and so are left to the latter end of exam period as for many students it is a chance to resit. This is also why many english language and maths exams are also in June, not May. It is only this year and last this has come to light as odd as re-sit rules are obviously getting stricter, and there have been many calls from teacher for the whole timetable pattern to be changed due to this.

sinningsaint · 31/05/2014 21:47

Olivo was that history? Wasn't that announced well in advance along with an explanation as too why? Correct me if i'm wrong, something I just vaguely remember.

hellsbells99 · 01/06/2014 09:12

Sinning - as the Gcses are now linear, it is daft!

No, child development, not history.

Geography was earlier this year too, at least DS1 board was.

AQA the typically unit 2 science fairly early on in May - mid teens is a good guess, always in order bio, chem phys, then unit 1 will be after half term, this year bio is 6/6 and the other two the week after. Personally I would leave your holiday of a lifetime to late June onwards to be certain.
