Waiting list and change of address

Does anyone have any info on what happens in this scenario :
My ds is on the waiting list for his first choice I think he's 35 on waiting list.
Unfortunately I have just split up from dh and he has moved out and renting much closer to first choice in school. This would mean we would go pretty near the top of waiting list.
I have let admissions know and have filled out a form stating that ds will be living between the 2,but probably more with me.
I seen to have conflicting info when I've spoken to them.
One person said you can choose which address to put down, whilst the other person stated it goes on the address child benefit is received at.

Anyone know the correct information?

I know friends in the past have just put down the address which is closer to their preferred school and this hasn't been questioned.

It's usually the address the child spends more time at if this is split evenly you get to choose I believe.

It is up to the admission authority (the school if it is a VA school, academy or free school, the LA otherwise) to set the rules on this. Many insist on the address where your son will spend the majority of his time. Some decide based on the address where child benefit is paid. A few will allow parents to choose.

Another factor in this situation is that some admission authorities will be very suspicious of a situation where one parent moves into rented accommodation near a popular school. They may think the break up is not genuine and that you intend to reconcile as soon as you have secured a place. In that situation they are likely to insist on using your address.

Isn't it where the child benefit goes to? (assuming you're claiming that)

I can see how it looks suspicious but there is definitely going to be no reconciliation :-)
It is a genuine move unlike some families I know who have used false addresses or moved immediately after allocation to get up waiting list.
I suppose I just wait and see what happens.

When I checked with the council about what happens in situations where the parents have split up,they did say they let the parents choose which address they put down.
I can't imagine they can now change the rules as its a late move and looks dodgy.
I do have evidence it's genuine ( solicitors details who's dealing with the divorce!)
Who would be best to speak too? The school or the council ?

I shall check with the school next week.i think there has been a lot of movement this year and I know of at least 3 families who have rented for the sole purpose of getting in and then have moved back to their usual address.
It's a shame this hasn't been investigated and these offers taken away.
