Year 10 mocks

RufusTheReindeer · 29/04/2014 20:58

Just a quick question. Ds is in the middle of his year 10 mocks

He is predicted mainly As but his results so far are Bs

My theory is that he has another year of learning to do and if his mocks are based on past papers then he is attempting year 11 work with year 10 knowledge

Or do I need to go into panic mode (only joking but you know what I mean)

Are Bs in year 10 quite good or should he be getting As already

I may well approach the school after the mocks are all finished and his results are in but any opinions would be appreciated

Wouldn't they be examining him on the topics he has already covered in Y10?

Mocks usually examine what has been taught so far - so the work covered in year 10.

I did think that but he said that a number of questions have been on topics they haven't done yet.

I think that was just on science though which seems to have been lifted wholesale from 2011/2012 papers

I think you are confirming that I need to go and bash him round the head Grin

In his defence he has only had two results back out of 10. Both were Bs one in a subject he has been predicted Bs for and the other were he is supposed to get an A.

I probably need to leave it a big longer don't I?

It means to me (sec head of science) if he could put a bit more effort in he could achieve As but if he is honestly already going full stretch he may have reached his potential already. It really does depend on the student, most can stretch themselves a bit further for the final exams as things get more serious.

Any support you are giving, even if its just making sure he is getting enough sleep is a good thing.

As for science exams, that would seem strange to me due to the very modular nature of the courses (3 modules per gcse) however, if he is doing iGCSE it may very well have included Y11 content.

Its got very complex in the last 10 years with so many changes.

Thanks for that. He was very pleased when he recognised his science questions from the past papers he had been looking at

Bs are what he has been predicted for science so he seems to be working at the right level

He does want all As and is probably capable with a bit of extra effort. It's trying to get through his thick skull that he really has to put the effort in at revision stage and he should revise everything, not just what he thinks might/should be in the exam
