New GCSE 2017 - numbers or letters too?

My child's school have said that the first year of the new gcse will just be number grades. I thought it was only maths, eng lang and eng lit that were numbers, the rest being G to A*. Anyone know for sure?

All subjects will ultimately move to numbered qualifications but it will be a phased introduction with Maths & English Lang & English Lit first (for exams taken in 2017) and others following - probably over a couple of years but they are still working on that.
