Best way to learn Japanese?

My 11 year old ds want to learn Japanese - don't really want to get a tutor unless he shows aptitude/ sticks at it for a while - any ideas best way to go about learning at home ?

My son also wanted to learn Japanese and has been doing an online program, called Japanese Mastery Method (heard about it from a friend). He seems to enjoy it. Compared to a tutor the price is very reasonable. He's in his teens and into Japanese comics and things.
