Cranleigh, Reeds or Lancing?

For DS... Very Sporty especially Rugby, middle academically and extroverted. Good pastoral care important, needs to be close to SW London... Any thoughts or advice out there on these choices? Tried some London days but didn't get in.

Are you looking for a boarding or day place at these schools? Cranleigh - good sport, competitive entry, expensive and in the middle of nowhere, nearest train station Guildford, 25 minute bus journey. Cranleigh very small and tends to have 'arty' type shops. Reeds -have you already got a place? again in the middle of nowhere, Oxshott station a good 20 minute walk minimum. Very good reputation for sport, was supposed to be middle of the road academically but getting harder to get in, entrance exam in January for 11+ entry and pre test at the beginning of yr 7 for 13+ entry. Lancing - known locally for music rather than sport.

Reed's is closest to SW London, with school buses running from there. Very sporty, excellent pastoral care, and academically on the up. What year entry are you looking for if you didn't get a place at a London day school? I doubt there will be places for September 2014

Any experience or goss on Dulwich?

The very sporty children at my DS's prep who weren't bright enough for a Tonbridge all went to Cranleigh all were at the very least middle academically. I met up with one of the mums recently they're really pleased with it, parents tend to be conservative with a small c and want a good solid education with lots of sport, cricket in particular I believe is very big. No full boarding, only weekly. Lancing is high church, smells and bells, that would put me off instantly, can't comment on Reeds.

No, I have no personal experience of Radnor, but parents seem happy with it.

Dulwich?

Did your ds not try Dulwich already? All places for this September were allocated back in February - it's oversubscribed so rejects a large number of boys and has a waiting list so I wouldn't have thought you'd have much luck at this stage

What year is your son, and what entrance are you applying for - 13+? 11+? Sept 14? Sept 15? Sept 16?

Of those I only know Reeds. It's a great school. Lots of sport, great pastoral care and strong academics. It has a reputation for both sport and pastoral care but it is also getting increasingly strong academically. I know several fairly bright boys who didn't get in recently, so you may need to make sure he's secure in the exam topics if you choose it.

Know pupils at a Lancing and Cranleigh. Lancing is more of a football school but apart from that they're not that dissimilar.

I think weekly boarding is pretty good at Reeds, it has good pastoral care too (unlike what I've heard of Cranleigh). I'd probably worry about full boarding at Reeds, but for weekly its fine.

Won't you need to get in touch with the schools asap, as most 13+ entries these days begin with an 11+ filter test and then a CE exam for 13+ as well.
