.

I thought I would start another thread as our "little ones" are about to go into Year 7

And all that will involve for us and them

I wish them all well and good luck in their new schools and hope they all make lots of new friends

Otherwise the old thread may get confusing iyswim

Sorry, put the comma in the wrong place in the last sentence.

Loshad · 06/10/2006 10:57

RTkangamummy, you must be so proud of kanga boy doing so well after his rocky start. So so about your other little boy.

RTKangaMummy · 15/10/2006 20:37

mumblechum Sorry for your loss of DS1 and glad that DS2 is sorted

Figroll I guess she is wanting to explore more, are you in a town or city?

We ordered DS a Oyster Card last week so he would be able to go on the tube alone, although DS walks to school and doesn't really need/want to go on the tube, we thought it would be better to get it so we are ready.

Loshad We are sooooooooo deffo proud of kangaboy

DS is getting soooooooooooooooooo much homework each night,

We had a parents evening last week and the teachers are all pleased with his work and he is getting good grades for half term grade report.

I hope all your DS/DD are getting on well too

Last night we went to a social night and so we met some of DS best friends parents and had a great time

gosh your Kangaboy and others are really independent aren't they? i would have real collywobbles about my DS1 and 2 (12 and 11) usuing even a bus, never mind london transport (probably seems scarier to me though as am not from london)

RTKangaMummy · 15/10/2006 22:39

Sorry probably gave wrong impression there

He gets cheap travel if we are with him in OFF PEAK

But to get cheap travel in PEAK times with us

And to get cheap travel alone he needs a photocard and this takes 2 weeks to arrive.

Some of his friends come to school on the tube and so if he was to go to their house after school he would need an oyster card

But I am hoping it will be a long time before he goes alone but want to get prepared beforehand

iyswim

An oyster card is a card that you put credit onto and it is scanned each time you travel - so he doesn't need money for tickets on trains or buses.

Kangaboy walks to school with his dad {who teaches there} and then walks home alone

I think it is just in london

When he gets it we can ask about getting it in Sussex and see whqat happens

You get used to them travelling about. I had the willies about it first and second time, but I am getting used to her going about on the bus now. We live in a very big city = not London - but she is always with her friends and she seems to have made lots of new ones, which is great.

RTKangaMummy · 25/11/2006 17:45

How are you guys doing?

Are your DD/DSs enjoying year 7

Kangaboy thinks it is deffo brill

Latin is his favourite and french his least fav.

We have soooooooo much homework though - 3 lots most nights

Anyway I want to recommend his book for you guys and your DD/DSs

It is a funny and informative look on being a teenager

DS loves it, we got ours in Aussie but the one in Amazon looks the same

He is ok atm thanks

We are waiting for the neurologist appointment to come through

GLad your DS is enjoying it too

OP posts:
Hallgerda · 26/11/2006 12:17

My DS1 is enjoying Latin too. (I have to admit I'm feeling rather sorry for Metella - anyone else? It seems being able to get the slaves didn't guarantee a well-run household...)

And we got a postcard home from the school music department in recognition of his hard work. (DS1 was as surprised as we were ).

The homework is quite heavy - around three, and sometimes even four, subjects a night, but he's coping.

I'm glad to hear your children are enjoying secondary school too, RTKM and Celia2.

We agree with you Hallgerda about Metella

No, he doesn't get Art homework as such, he has been given a sketch book and set of pencils that he can draw in at home and it will be added to his grades, but he is doing colour theories and experiments atm

So not really suitable for homework iyswim

DS1 gets art homework most weeks, and it usually takes a few hours on a Saturday morning. He enjoys it though. Last week's exercise was drawing a member of his family - me! It came out reasonably human, but not that much like me .

Celia2, is the cross-section the exercise in which you take a photo of someone, cut it in half and draw the missing half? DS1 got that the week before last.

Peppers are good in omelettes and salads, unlike the rose my mum had to draw for O'Level that dropped most of its petals in the course of the examination.

I'd better explain about Metella. She has a husband who goes out to buy a male slave and comes back with a pretty slave girl instead, a cook who chases slave girls and invites greedy friends round instead of concentrating on the job, and a dog (Cerberus) who steals sausages left lying around by the cook in one of his inattentive moments. I thought it was funny when I was at school, but now I'm almost annoyed enough on Metella's behalf to start a support thread for put-upon wives in language textbooks.

mumblechum · 27/11/2006 10:36

On the Art homework subject, my ds's homework was, get this, to reproduce exactly one of Cezanne's landscapes. He spent 5 hours!!!!!!!!!!!over the weekend laboriously doing it on a grid system suggested by his dad.

I bet he only gets a C for it as well, the art teacher is such a

fizzbuzz · 27/11/2006 20:42

I'm an art teacher...seems rather a big homework for Y7. I don't think I would like to reproduce one of Cezannes landscapes.....

figroll · 29/11/2006 09:57

My dd has had a van Gosh picture to draw! She is so slap dash though it only took her about 30 mins - I bet the artist himself took a bit longer! It is a bit unfair though, as most children seem very conscientious in year 7 and will try very hard (except my dd2 who seems to think 5 minutes a night is quite adequate).

Seriously though, I have been surprised at how little homework she gets - she does do it very quickly but still seems to get very good marks. I have been pleased at how self disciplined she is becoming - she disappears upstairs and works in her room. Great.

figroll · 29/11/2006 09:58

I meant Van Gogh of course!
