What do you put in the first paragraph of job application letters?

I haven't written one for 12 years. I've been a full time mum for 8 years and I've found a job I want to apply for. Donkeys' years ago on PGCE we were told to begin a letter with our philosophy of education but that seems very cheesey. I've tried drafting one and have begun with 'I am a very experienced teacher' blah blah into what experience I've got but it doesn't read well.
Really need some help.

I would put why you want to work at that school specifically and make it personal to them. I would also put in as u say how many years experience u have and why now this is the job for u. good luck.

I guess 'I want to work for you because my children go to your school and I would get a large fees reduction' might not be the best opener :)

I would just keep my letter factual and simple. Are you attaching CV or is it application form? Either way, most of the detailed info they want will be on there.

I would simply say "I am writing to apply for the position of xxx as advertised in yyy. I attach my CV/form. I am especially interested in this role because... I feel I can offer ... "

And maybe add in an eye-catching thought about something that has inspired you or a simple achievement from your recent life (if you are a SAHM then it could be something like "seeing my 10yo grasp the concept of xxx has reminded me why I love teaching children")

HTH and good luck!
